I'm going to Avoriaz skiing in a couple of weeks. It's a bit last minute, but looks like they've still got a lot of snow! V excited!

I've never been to Avoriaz before, any of you lot been? What can I expect? Any really awesome runs to aim for? I can manage anything up to an easy black really. I don't ski off piste much but would like to give it a go, any areas accessible by lift to try?

Looks awesome though... This is from the webcam yesterday...

Not the prettiest but cracking slopes. Some fantastic tree lined runs in Morzine which is easy to get to.

There is a bar there that sells Mutzig as well.

Cool, can you ski down to Morzine? Doesn't look like there's a run on the piste map...

The ski company is offering a 'Portes du Soleil' pass upgrade for £40. I take it my current pass (not sure what it is) won't cover Morzine?

Get the portes du soleil pass. It's a huge ski area and worth checking out even if some of the connections aren't very good.

Yeah get the portes de soleil pass. The area is worth skiing in full. I seem to remember going across 3 countries' borders in a day.

Avoriaz is really out of the way but has stunning views. It looks like a LOTR town when you see it from afar!

Yeah, from a distance Avoriaz looks amazing, the buildings are literally on a cliff edge so its pretty spectacular. However, up close they look pretty drab.

I've only stayed in Morzine, but with the Portes Du Soliel pass you nip in out of the entire area. Avoriaz certainly has the best Parks in the area, but I heard they've moved one of them over to the Morzine side recently.

Never stayed there but riddern there a lot staying elsehwere in Port du Soleil. It's ace. Get the p de s pass and do it all. Good park right by the resort centre and I think as it is so concentrated it would be fun in the evening. Have stayed at chatel a lot which is next valley over.

I've been there the last 4 times I've been away. Well in Morzine but you get the idea.

Make sure you goto Robinsons bar in Morzine and have a beer. They only serve it in half pints unless you're a regular as it's stronger than it should be :)

Also, if you're feeling brave head over to 'The Wall' which crossed over to Switzerland. Awesome run if you fancy a challange ;)

When I went there we skied halfway through it before we realised we were there, a massive building suddely loomed up in front of us about 20ft away. :p

TBH I didn't rate it much, however snow conditions were terrible and the pistes were packed, both of which don't look like they will be like that this year. We stayed in Morzine and found the best place to ski was the other side of Le Gets, however there were some nice runs all over. :)

What's The Wall like? I had hoped to go down but the conditions were so bad most of the week I didn't get there in the end. :(

The wall is pretty daunting at first. I've been down is 15+ times over the years. Last year was the worst as there was thick fog. visibility was around 5' if that. Made it more exciting lol.

If it's a nice day it can actually put you off. You see what you're letting yourself infor lol.

I've got some pics somewhere I'll get them posted.

The pictures don't really show it's fully 'potential' but gives you a good idea.

The steepness isn't the main problem. It's the steepness plus the huge moguls!

Should have the pics up in a couple of hours. Just need to get home and sort them :)

Just saw a youtube video, looks a nice little run, you can never tell quite how steep they are when they are photographed. :D

Moguls don't bother me too much, especially big ones, it's those medium sized ones that are the most annoying. :p

I'm out there at the moment. Well to be accurate I'm at La Chappelle D'Abondance but so far this week I've skied Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz, Chatel, Pres Le Joux, Champary, Torgon, Morgans and a few others. Snow is still good but it's been bitterly cold so the off piste has been crap really. Far too hard and cruddy. Sun came out today though and burnt me to buggery, which is nice but still very compact pistes so I've just dropped the skis in for a service as I couldn't get a good bite. Area is huge though and if you like to get about, it's perfect for that. Get the full pass though or you will be very limited.

While you're up there look for la fornet i think it's called, it has got some great skiing up there and no one really uses the pistes in that section and snow is still superb.

I'm in Avoriaz at the moment, going home tomorrow though. :(

Had a great weeks skiing! Weathers been great, i think there was one afternoon were visibility was poor. A few icy bits though which can catch you unaware, could just do with a few inches of fresh snow and it would be great!

You mentioned you don't normally go off piste. In the original post with the webcam image, if you head out towards the kind of bowl in the distance (when I get home tomorrow i'll add an arrow to the image to make it clearer) there is some amazing off piste skiing to be had there!

You also mentioned the ski pass upgrade, definitely get that. Some great runs can be accessed, but only with the Portes du Soleil pass ;)

Anything you want to know, just ask...
