Hi there

I'm planning on switching from my Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone to the Blackberry 8520 shortly and was wondering if there's anyone here using this phone and their opinions on it?

I really cant get used to the touch screen on my Nokia and texting is a complete PIA without the stylus - I've read a few reviews and it appears I can get Blackberry for around £25.00PM on O2 with 100mins, unlimited texts and tinternet.

Any advice is greatly appreciated as I've always had PAYG and this would be my first ever contract phone.

I know two people with it, one being my sister and it's a great little phone and very good value for money, and btw you can get a much better deal on the 8520 than the one you've mentioned, just look around (especially on hotdealsuk). It's a good entry level BB, solid phone, does all the basic BB functionality very well. Only down side(s) is that it doesn't have 3G(not a big deal) and no GPS.

I had the 5800 back in May, and I hated it, switched to BB and never looked back!

Hope this helps, you should go for it.

A friend of mine got the 8530 off of the Jersey site for £130 refirbed the other day. She sent it back though as she didn't like the fact it didn't have 3g or EDGE (she's on T-Mobile). She got it for pretty much the same reasons you do.

Not having EDGE would be T-Mobiles fault, not the handset. Can get EDGE fine on all the other networks with this handset no problem.

EDGE itself isn't too bad. I run my 9000 in 2G/EDGE mode to save battery 95% of the time!

i work for carphone and to b honest your better off going with the bold 9700. much better imo. you can get it on orange for £30 1200mins + ultd txt + internet and BB services (24month).

Yes the 9700 Bold would be a better option...the best BB handset out at the moment but the 8520 is a good little device but very basic ie no GPS and 3G...i would have probably went with the 8900 curve over the 8520 but thats me.

As for not getting Edge??...like gamer said its Tmobile at fault...they dont support Edge where Orange, Voda and O2 support Edge.

But really id go for the 9700 in all honesty...much much better handset.

I meant she couldn't get EDGE, not that it was the phones fault. :D

I occasionally use EDGE on my HD when o'm not in a 3g area and it seems pretty fast, fine for me. Her keeping it would have meant GSM only unfortunately. I also didn't realise anyone but O2 actually used EDGE. :)

I bought my wife one a few months back and to be honest its a horrible handset.

It looks and feels cheap and the Nokia E71 that replaced it about a month later is 10 times better.

She also didnt need the stupid BIS rubbish to receive push emails as nokia messaging does it for free.

Hi there

Thanks for all the input guys, my decision to opt for the 8520 is because my OH has this phone and I quite like the GUI and the trackerball thing. I never use my mobile for calls, only texting and browsing, as I've mentioned before texting on the Nokia is a PIA and lets not even go there with their internet browser

I will look into the other Blackberrys suggested in this thread and hopefully manage to get myself a good deal :)

The 8520 and 9700 are BB's without the trackball, they come with the trackpad which imo is a much better way of navigating and helps resolve trackball issues ie getting stuck etc.

If your not that concerned with 3G capability then the 8520 will suit although its very basic ie no gps or have a look at the 8900 curve which is another great device albeit it has the trackball rather than the trackpad...both are good BB's though. Also keep in mind that internet browsing on BB's arent that great either...the web browser leaves a lot to be desired for ie slow at rendering pages especially on GPRS...3G is slightly faster though.

Hi there

Thanks for the above advice again, got my first contract phone yesterday, opted for the Blackberry 8520 on T Mobile. I'm paying £20.00PM for 300mins / 300texts / unlimited broadband and email.

Yes I know its an entry level blackberry but it serves my needs well and I'm quite happy with the package offered. I decided after 10 years as a PAYG customer with O2 if they cant offer a competitive price/package then I'll no longer be requiring their services. I've had no problems so far with the phone and everything was easy to set up, however I am wondering if any other blackberry users have any suggestions as to the best sites to download themes from?
