UbiSoft servers are down again this weekend

Haha good on the DoS attacks imo. These companies need to learn that no one apart from them actually want DRM and if they keep pushing it people will protest and man have already done so in refusing to buy their product (including me) and now others are going a step futher and DoS attacking them. Although I think the latter is an illeagal action so they want to be careful. Anyway I refuse to purchase a game that only lets me activate it a limited amount of times, only lets me play it when I' connected to their server - which is crap, and doesn't give me any control over my OWN game which I purchased.

Why should anyone purchase a game that only makes it difficult on the consumer? Poor business imo. The hackers will win everytime and Ubisoft just need to accept that as do other companies. They tried it with the music industry and it failed, learn from the past. On another note, most of the time when people pirate a game its because they wouldn't buy it anyway, or they simply can't afford it. So even with DRM business isn't going to get better, it will only get worse, as it already has.

EDIT:
or just switching them off all together when they don't want to support it anymore)

This is one reason I deffinitely won't buy it. Do you honestly trust these companies? They will happily just switch off the servers when they release the next one, like EA have done, something I have no respect for, you pay for a service, if they don't supply it then I won't buy it.

ubi will just claim that they need more DRM cos the game sales were so low because people cracked it =P

you all know thats how the big software devs think lol, its the only fesable explination!!

That's up to the individual, some people may not have a problem with this type of DRM. If most DO care and don't buy it, then it'll show in the sales figures.

Oh absolutely. Though unfortunately I think by the time people realise this type of DRM is bad it will be too late. DRM like this only serves to hurt the consumer and should be actively discouraged. Problem is most consumers won't know why they should bother untill sat there one afternoon not being able to play their game because Virgin media are throwing a hissy fit, by which point Ubisoft will have their sales figures. I doubt most consumers even know what DRM is, let alone why this particular brand would be bad.

Aye they will twist and turn the story into something that suits them to rally people against piracy. The same way as they will claim the DoS attack was evil (which it was i guess) and say the "pirates" that did it need to be brought to justice.

With Nr Newell publicly speaking out against DRM though there could be some interesting times ahead

Not buying is not a strong enough protest i feel, this will be faaarrr more effective then poor sells, they will think it didn't sell for another reason, like the game was crap.

I am playing Assassins Creed 2 today, sunday, and I played it saturday as well.

No problem logging on to the Ubisoft servers at all. In fact I haven't had a single problem since buying the game on launch day.

Any server attack obviously haven't brought down all servers.

A piracy web site coordinating a denial of service attack in protest at DRM is just pathetically hypocritical IMO - get a life.

I think you mis-understand.

How about the fact the "pirates" can now prevent legit users from playing the game?

This highlights that the DRM infrastructure is too weak and this needs to be proven.

This is Ubisofts fault plain and simple.

Well done Ubisoft, incompetent monkeys.

True, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to launch a DDoS attack. If that's all that it takes to down thousands of people playing the game then it is obviously a pile of junk. Why game developers persist in using DRM is beyond me. As I said earlier, the music industry tried using DRM and it failed miserably. Now the games industry is trying it and guess what, it's failing. Only an idiot would use something that has been proven to fail in the past. I can't see the attraction to the comanies that use it, it only hurts the sales, and brings down user confidence and loyalty.

Both SH5 and AC2 are cracked and fully playable. So there drm failed, they fail. ubisoft need to realise this and patch it out for legit users. The only real losers of this sad affair.

I have yet actually to see hard proof that there was ever a DDos attack ?
Just because Ubi said so doesn't make it so ?

More like they under estimated demand or misconfigured their 'constantly monitored' servers.

Looks like there new DRM is working really great and is stopping 1000's of people from being able to play.....

But there is one little problem,it the 1000's of people that payed for the game

The attack was coordinated publically on a well known torrent site by people annoyed that the game wasn't cracked and so they couldn't play it. Trying to make out it was some noble form of protest is just laughable. Presumably any service that requires a net connection could be affected using the same illegal tactic so what does it prove?

I doubt very much that there are no preventative measures to deal with some group wielding the mighty PING. What do competent Network Admins use/do? I think my own router has a way of dealing with DoS attacks (Note I am no admin).

It strikes me that UBI scrimped on Infrastructure, and are now paying the price.

My £17 grey market key says otherwise. :D

How pathetic though crying on some web site that you cant get a pirated version of some game to the extent that you would want to stop other people playing it. Those losers should get a job.

P.S. the game is great. ;)

Ubi blamed the pirates for the first one at some point and unless individuals were doing it themselves the groups had nothing to do with it. So now ubi are reaping what they sowed.

But now theres more evidence thats its the pirates fault and very little that its Ubi's.

lol

Let's see: 1k digit key printed only in braille, with an included offer to learn such braille for a small fee ~ disc check, fingerprint/retinal scanner (sold separately by publisher) and game-centric political/law quiz before each play ~ only 1 install on one machine and then you have to buy a new copy ~ be connected to the internet or you can't play ~ new region scheme where game shipments are tied to postal codes and are unplayable outside of immediate purchase area ~ a rootkit that periodically scans for altered game files and upon finding the slightest change (like a re-named shortcut) rings ubisoft and they immediately void your game and IP ban you from their forums.................
