Sounds like theres been a leak or two which over time has rotted the floor boards, theres a good chance that the support joists may have been weakened as well.

it was a bathroom so much have been structually unsound some kind of leakage in the pipes

I can’t believe it, how long can it take to get in a state like this. I suggest that take you a lot of pictures to document this.

Are you sure that the floor wasn't rotten due to persistent flooding of the bathroom/shower?

Get a building surveyor in to assess the building. It probably will be expensive; circa £400. However, he will identify what is wrong with the building, and you will have something on paper. The Landlord will not be able to sue you. You will be able to sue the land lord. Get the building survey or assessed by another professional, as soon as possible.

I'd get them to get an independent structural inspection done, and take him to the small claims court for failure to upkeep the property, and injuries to yourself if he's threatening to take legal action.

To be honest, if he's threatening you, rather than feeling mortified himself, he sounds like he has this coming to him.
