My mum wants to upgrade to windows but she doesn't want to buy a new pc. Will Win 7 32bit run ok on :-

P4 3.2ghz
1GB 333mhz DDR Ram
ATI 9600 AGP
250GB IDE Disk

The PC is an old Fujitsu Siemens. Will win 7 automatical install chipset & Lan drivers if needed as I doubt there are dedicated win 7 drivers?

Thanks.

Yes But if possible I would get another 1GB of Ram. Should work excellently. I am running on a 3.2 Pent 4 but with 2GB of Ram - but then I am running on an asus netbook N450 with again 2GB of ram but the Asus was sold with just 1GB of ram.
As for the drivers Windows 7 is the best yet for having the drivers and indeed of downloading them after the initial installation
It will be a good move !

Should be fine, will run it better than Vista. An extra 1GB of RAM would help performance.
Windows 7 has drivers for all common hardware - run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on the existing OS to check.

Ok so I need an extra GB of ram. Should I just buy two of these :-

That will give 3gb in total but will it be compatible with the current 1gb installed?

We use that Corsair stuff in our IBM machines at work with the same chipset and it's solid as a rock. Speed difference shouldn't matter as it will be in a different bank, it may well clock it down to 333MHz.

Without taking it to a discussion about RAM usage - which has been done to death - my advice would be to just try it with 1GB. It will run ok and save you £70 if you're happy with it.

Yeah, 1GB should be fine for basic use - ie word Processing, email, a bit of light web surfing.

My Dad was using my ancient 2001 vintage P4 2.6 with a 1GB for a few weeks after his PC broke. He said it was fine for everything he used it for (see above), but was a bit slow when he started playing with his digital photos or fired up the scanner.

I have Windows 7 running on 1GB RAM at home on a 3700+ and that runs fine. A client also has a machine running 7 with just 1GB RAM, and again, runs just fine.

I run Windows 7 on my lil netbook. I think yours should cope.

do you run it with 1GB ? , I'am asking as I have swapped out my 1GB memory and replace it myself 2 screws , 2 clips and straight out , 2gb straight in no problem.

There'll be another thread in 6 months to spec a new machine.

Of course there will. She might as well buy go i7, 8gb of RAM and an ATI 5970 now. Would sure make her typing experience more fluid.

I don't know about your mother OP, but mine isn't bothered so long as the waits aren't horrific. It'll be fine.

7 runs as well or better than XP on low end hardware in my experience.

Oh shush. The OP's mother's PC is slightly higher spec than my brother's running W7 64 and he has had no problems with performance when browsing the web and playing media. Stop talking crap.
