Digital Economy Bill passed through the Lords

If my day hadn't already been ruined, that would have been sufficient enough to do it. One step closer to a ridiculous piece of legislation being put in place. :(

Little confused. So the internet is now a fundamental right that everyone should have. Meaning it cannot be blocked or taken away like water or power. But the new laws say it can be blocked and taken away.

Another example of draconian legislation from Labour. If they want to do something about copyright infringement, making it a criminal matter subject to standard due process is the way forward, not random blocking and spying legislation.

Copyright infringement is already a criminal offence subject to 'due process' when there is 'deliberate intent', except getting the required standard of proof regarding intent is all but impossible.

Me and a friend where talking about this.

What we thought would happin is that torrent clients will come up with some kind of encryption running over it, so it will be pushed further underground. When it gets to that point it's going to be a main route for sharing god knows what!

Music and movies lisecening companies really have no clue of the digital age the are selling in, I have zero sympathy for them. Their lack of williningness to adapt to how media was changing lies completly with them, and their just reaping their failures!

Mandelson is just showing how he's been bought, again, by big media cheques.

Then the law needs to be suitably revised rather than the law being put into place at the moment.

Of course i'd never download any music illegally, but if I did, it would make me a lot more likely to go to concerts & events to see said artists than I ever would without hearing their music.. Not to mention telling friends about their albums etc

Sharing has been encrypted since the dawn of the internet ;/ And if sites like the pirate bay are blocked (which will no doubt happen) where are you going to get your torrent links from? Carrier pigeon?

Just out of interest, how would you tackle piracy?

Leave it alone, and stop trying to convince us that people downloading stuff is somehow the source of all evil, they need to adjust and charge realistic prices for things, one of the last sentences in that article sums it up perfectly.

"The public will not respect a law that was quite literally written by the record industry, for the record industry."

and blocking sites? are people not capable of making rational decisions about the sites they visit? do we live in a nation full of people that need that kind of decision making for them?

Agreed. Funny how they are rushing it through before the election and that the law has a back door allowing blocking of websites. Hmmmm.

Where is this so called "due process" with regards to this bill? Where is the proof that the person has downloaded anything, where is their right to defence?

The whole thing is a joke and kept as a civil matter as if it was ever tried under criminal law the so called evidence would get laughed out of court. Hell a freshly graduated lawyer could defend the case!

By ignoring it and making content easily and legally available at a fair price.

No matter how many websites are banned there will always be places like IRC to distribute the torrents and nzbs.
Its a stupid piece of legislation and makes me wonder how the old gits of the house of lords even have the capacity to fathom what any of it means.

Well they are never going to stop private trackers.. thats just a fact, they will stop the big sites like pirate bay where most people get there torrents from and make it more of a minority activity
