Hi Folks

Its exciting times at OcUK, the launch of the brand new Intel 980X is upon us.

This CPU is truly brilliant. We have managed to surpass all of our own expactations with the chip.
In most tasks it seems a little faster than a normal quad core i7, but when under load the 980X is an encoding monster.

here is my initial testing on the 980X comparing it like for like with an i7 920

Both examples running at 4.2GHz [200X21] on the same overclock settings [the 980x needed a few voltage tweaks over the settings for the 920]

Please remember that the 980X tests were performed with the original Rampage Gulftown BIOS so the chip shows as 000 not 980X
The bios was a little clunky with the chip as it was 'Pre Launch'.

Testing Equipment
Test Chip [Intel Core i7 920/Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition]
EK Supreme/Thermochill 120.3/sharkoon 1000rpm/D5 Vario
Asus Rampage II Extreme
6GB OCZ Blade 2000MHz Memory
Radeon 4890 Crossfire
Intel 160GB SSD
Asus OC Station Controller
Corsair 850W Modular PSU

pushing further, I managed to get the 980X to 5GHz [HT Disabled]

There was still some headroom here for suicide runs, however my highest stable clock on good watercooling was 4.4ghz
I think with the release of newer BIOS versions, we could see the overclocking capabilities of this monster increase!

Damn! this couldnt have arrived at a worse time!

Its time for my Upgrade but... nearly a bag of spuds on a CPU!

The missus will never know! ?

Lol! Love it.

First post about this 6 core monster and what do they do with a nearly £900 fastest chip out there?

Overclock it.

Love it! :D

The price is better than I expected considering the exchange rate atm. I'm really tempted.

Is this going to be the actual price on release or is it a pre-order special?
