PC gaming 2009 =

Steam sales + WOW will be most of that. How much of it was actual retail or non Steam sales DD I wonder?

Consoles sales were $57B for the same period which puts it into perspective!

its not $57B for consoles its 57-13 which comes to $44B for Wii, DS, ps3, psp, ps2, xbox360 + software sales from games + accessories? LOL pc gaming dwarfs any single console even without adding hardware(graphics cards etc) and accessories.

If that's the case then why are a huge proportion of games developers flocking to consoles?

I'm not disputing the fact that the console market is probably higher, but even if it wasn't, the reasons they'd be flocking to consoles are:

Easier to develop for (Not gotta take into account different hardware, older hardware that they know how to use)
Supposedly less piracy
Charge higher prices
Charge for DLC/Modders can't come along and provide new content
Shorter lifespan of games and force people to play sequels due to modders not enhancing the gameplay and lifespan and keeping servers going
More worth it making retail copies, which means they can appeal to the market where people will just see something in store and buy it because it looks alright

Many more I'm sure.

I think this is a fallcy though, Modern Warfail 2 was actually pirated on Xbox far before PC.

Xbox piracy is a lot more complicated and hassle than simply downloading an ISO and swapping an exe file.

It would be interesting to know rough figures for both but I would imagine the PC version was much more heavily pirated.

I do think the developers will start to look at CD keys tied to Live in the future though.

They fair well actually.

There are 6 consoles that still sell consoles and games, to my knowledge anyway:

PS3
PS2
Xbox 360
Wii
Nintendo DS
Sony PSP

They compete against each other and PC's/flash games/mobile phone games.

57billion divided by 6.... 7 if you count mobile phones.

That $57b includes the PC games too doesn't it?

"For the sake of comparison, DFC Intelligence estimated that the worldwide gaming market--including console hardware--would hit $57 billion in 2009."

The way I read it that $57b figure is ALL gaming, PC and consoles included, so take away the $13b the PC made and you have $44b to spread between the consoles.

It's quite probable that piracy is much more rampant for PC format games than consoles, but surely the figures put the PC a cut ahead despite this? They're not counting 'potential' sales lost to piracy in value estimations, only sales.

In addition to which, how many of the big DD retailers were included in these figures? Almost certainly Steam, but what about D2D or the EA store? And what about the little guys, like GOG.com?

PC gaming, as boring as this is getting now, is dead for me.... I have a gaming rig up stairs what cost me a bomb and the thing aint been switched on for well over 3 month now.

Would sell it if it wasn't for how pathetically low the resale value is on components is.

Console > PC for gaming
PC > Console for high detailed gaming, res, graphics options ect (which i aint interested in anymore seen as PS3 isn't far off at all with detail)

So end of day PC gaming aint what it use to be for me, only PC games ive played in a long time is BF2 and TrackMania which have been out years and thats only because they play on my MBP.

I still buy boxed copies of games. Looks like other people dont like them boxed though.

Given the choice, I'll get it on Steam if I can (i.e. if it's on a deal, because full price on Steam is often ridiculous). If not, then I'll get a boxed game - but I do miss the proper boxes, A4 size and an inch and a half thick, and manuals with which you could club a seal to death. I'm not sure why the aversion, but I'd rather not buy from places like D2D unless it's a deal I really can't miss out on.

I would gladly take it off your hands. :p

no the difference is that everybody has broadband now that can download any game in a couple of hours

i use to dl from warez sites but i use steam now, i just want to be able to get my game without leaving the house the convenience is brilliant,

especially as steam is the only drm to actually work

Steam was cracked a long time ago. Fortunately, because of the way such things work, it's only possible to play the single-player.

Server-side authentication for multiplayer means that with a Steam cracked copy you can't play on public servers.

I'm like you, I just enjoy have an impressive pile of games in the corner of my room. Only time I buy from Steam is if i suddenly get asked to play something I don't own by a load of people or if it's too hard to source a hard-copy of something (Really old games etc).

Reminds me of the good ol' days of Microprose flight sims and a small tree sacrificed to the God of Manuals. PDF's just aren't the same :D

Few people have hit the nail on the head. For me, the reasons seem to be consoles are cheaper, people can hook them up to their big ass HD tv (y00) and can sit on the couch and get fat(er).

Computers have and always will present a portal to the world wide web, but people havent known how to use it. A long comes something like an xbox 360, and all people have to do is flick the dashboard to see stuff they think they need (reminds me of AOL for some reason, you know, closed off in a way). Its just easier for them.

Personally I buy a game if its something I really want and can get it at a decent price (brand new £30 or less), be it online or my local shop. I go round friends to check out games theyve got, and occasionally download something I can pick up £5 secondhand somewhere anyway.

For instance, I dont think my recent illicit download of Zoombinis (the 1990's version) is going to hurt anyone (it runs quite happily on windows 7 btw :D )
