Hi Guys,

As part of an English assignment, I have to write a short discursive writing essay (750 words) on any sbject. I have chosen the British Monarchy and will look at the pros and cons before writing a conclusion.

It is only A level standard so nothing too difficult, but I'm after your views on the monarchy and any points that I could raise that would help me.

I'm obviously going to talk about the cost and the number of 'cling-ons' that form part of the Royal Family. As well as talking about the tradition and impact on tourism that they have in the UK.

Any other pros and cons that you can think of would be great :)

I don't agree with a monarchy and think a democracy is a better system. But as the Royal Family have no power they aren't much different to any other wealthy family apart from they bring in a bit of tourism which makes us more than they cost.

I say keep them just for the LOLz.

They've got no real power, but they still use their status to drum up a lot of business towards the UK. They also do a lot of charity work, and of course contribute to what tourists want to see as well.

They probably don't cost nearly as much as they used to for the tax payer.

Plus Prince Phillip always provides lots of laughs.

I'm ok with it providing Charles is never king and his son doesn't turn out be a idiot like his farther.

I suppose in reality that means I don't have any faith in the long term viability of a hereditary monarchy in this country.

A monarchy can be as good as the king/queen that is in power. If you have a good king he can't sort out the corrupt politics and shananigans with a flick of the wrist. If you have a bad king, it can get ugly.

Unfortunatly the current british monarchy has been manipulated and controlled for centuries and had a lot of its power removed as such is just a fancy show piece. (expensive one)

I look forward to harry as king, here is to harry, lets hope he shakes things up a bit :D

It's going to be very difficult to refine the entire monarchy down to 750 words without omitting important stuff (and therefore presenting a biased argument) or hacking everything around in to an unreadable mess.

Maybe find a subject you can apply a bit more focus to.

The main benefit they have (other than actually making the UK money, much more than they cost) is that it means we do not have to elect a head of state. Considering the lack of decent candidates for such a position I would say that is a godsend.

Harry for king, if only we could skip out his brother and dad and get him in there, sitting on the throne in a nazi uniform smoking a spliff.

That is a king I could worship.

I personally am in favour of the Monarchy and although ther power has been largely lost through the ages, I think they bring a bit of stability in the face of changing governments and still command the respect of the majority of the British people and beyond.

Some of the most fascinating history can be read by studying the monarchy since the days of William I.

Nearly all their wealth and property is theirs and would remain theirs.
We would have to elecet and pay for some pleb who is rubbish at the job.
The royal family are trained from birth, well respected around the world and are the best ambasodrs available to represent us, they are also a constant unlike an elected party. They bring in huge amounts of tourism. Not only should they stay they should get back the powers they have lost and be able to use them, to keep parliment in check.

Prince Charles is awesome, and yes he will become King when The Queen dies.

I like the royal family, I wish they had more power as they would probably sort this country out.

There is good reason why they are not allowed to do so.

The problem is Royal Families have there up and downs as well, the current one is pretty good imo, so I don't feel they would go mad with power.

How, we never see them?

Thats because they are doing diplomatic things in other countries. Also, as they have no, power, they don't need to be around all the time.
