Champagne Taste and Beer Money Syndrome ?

My dreams aren't all that wild to be honest. I'm quite odd in that although I admire super/hyper cars, I don't really aspire to own one and could never really see myself in a Lambo or Ferrari.

What I do aspire to however and something that I think should be pretty realistic one day is to be able to walk into a BMW/Merc/Audi dealer and order a brand new car with M / AMG / RS in the model description.

My E39 M5 will just have to do until then (with maybe an M6 along the way in a couple of years).

Same here, my dream car has been an e46 m3 csl for years

To the OP as i replied before reading the thread,

I do wonder why you seem to track the price of lamborghinis and stuff like that?

Seems not only a waste of time but also a bit demoralising?

One important thing to think about though is that cars are just a "thing" ... try not to get caught up in consumerism and wanting a bigger and better car for the sake of it. Would you rather have a 911 Turbo, or a more normal car and enjoy yourself in other ways - e.g. experiencing new stuff, more holidays, travelling the world etc.

That's me down to a tea. I'd like a nice car and could afford one fairly easily. However, I'd rather have the nice house and enjoy my free time doing other things I enjoy over having a nice car on the drive.

I could afford a Ferrari but I choose not to as I cannot possibly justify it to myself and would rather release spare capital for my psuedo playboy lifestyle trading the stock market.

Good plan!

i remember when i was walking through the little village at 15 with my grandad when i saw a red renault 5 turbo turn out onto the main road and plant his foot down, with hindsight he was only probably running a stock engine with 15psi of boost but at that moment i was mesmerised, the noise, the screech of tyres, the way the back end dropped. At that point i decided i wanted one.

So i saved my money when i got a part time job at 16, until when i turned 18 i had the money and bought one.

When it comes to money and cars, thats always been my priority.

The when i turned 21 i outgrew my r5, it was pushing over double the horsepower of a stock one and i had reached its practical limit as my need for faster speeds increased.

I then spent some time without a car so that i could gather funds and decide what to have next, i spent a lot of time thinking about and trying to make sure any mistakes i made with my previous car was not going to repeat again.

I needed something that i was unable to grow out of, that at any point when you would normally reach a limit, there was something else to do.

Eventually i decided on a 3rd gen rx7, its arguebly the best handling coupe to ever come out of japan(though nsx/s2000 might debate that) so im never gonna get to the point where i think i need something that handles better.

I can pretty much reach limitless power, 600bhp twin rotor on pump fuel, 900bhp triple rotor on pump fuel, 1100bhp quad rotor, so theres no chance ill ever be able to crave more power than it will produce.

Other things like looks etc can be changed to how i want it but generally i cant realistically think of any other car that will likely come into my budget in life that will significantly beat that enough for me to want to change.

While reading this thread i did think about porsches, say the GT2 but then apart from the badge to pull women what could that offer me that my car cant do, the rx7 was marketed at people who bought 911s

So then we get onto ferraris, well yeh they look great but for me will be to slow and the ones that arnt(enzo/fxx) will never be in any range that ill be able to afford.

I think what im saying is, everyone has there dream car, but think about what other cars more realistically can do that without the price tag as there are a few.

Plus like a few people have mentioned you need to choose how you prioritise for your life, i take home £700 a month, dont live with my parents yet i tax, fuel, insure my car at 25 and im building it to produce 700bhp, put your money where your heart is and you can achieve anything

Sorry if this is a long post, just typing stuff as it comes into my mind

I am glad my taste in cars is strange and most are under 12k. From old saabs to american cars like cadillacs. I have now owned most I wanted and am ready to trade in for a mondeo etc come july as im going back to college.

So at the moment im just happy to be and feel lucky I dont want to own something at over 30k :D

I work with Jaguars/Landrovers and it's even more depressing driving cars you know you'll probably never be able to afford :-(

Last year, the % of the population earning £118,00 or over is 1 %.

Food for though, that if we sample the OcUK user base, only 1 % of OcUK forum members earn that sort of money, and could afford this sort of lifestyle. Looking at the number of current owners of supercars on these forums. Id say that figure holds true.

But going back to my point, that means that 99 % of the population wont be able to afford the sort of lifestyle im on about. My point being, that it does bother me that i'm possibly not going to be able to part of that 1 %. £31,000 a year puts you into the top 25 % of all earners. Thats achievable. But nowhere enough to start running multiple supercars, whilst not skimping elsewhere by living in a 2 bed terrace for example.

Who cares about the rest of the population and statistics. If you follow them too closely then you might be end up being stuck as one of them! :p

I see your £118k stat, but you really don't need £118k per annum coming in to afford to run some serious metal. Hell, I originally specd up buying a noble and running it for 1/2 yrs for some fun, but thank god I had some sense and went for something an awful lot cheaper in the shape of DC2 project car.

I'm glad I did, as I spend more time out and about around London/St Albans, so only get to use or work on the car on the odd evening/weekend. Life does move on, and changes can be swift and drastic. The most important thing is living within your means and being happy, but have some aspiration as well, life is too short to worry :)

What? Neither of those are that expense or unreachable?

I'll rephrase - i'll never be able to afford the ones I want (XFR, Range Rover 5.0S/C). You are right though, they're not THAT expensive - it's all the expense that goes with owning on that would make it out of my reach :p

They wouldn't be that expensive to own, about the same as any performance car (M, AMG...) Not cheap but not exactly approaching supercar £££.

your missing the point.

I'm not saying you need 118k to run a noble. I'm saying you'd need 118k to run maybe run a maserati gran turismo, and then maybe a noble as well, and then say a TTs for the wife. And then have a nice house, and a family

Sure, if your willing to comprimise on the nice house bit, and not have a family / wife, i'm sure a noble is perfectly attainable. But thats not what my post is about.

I'm sure a few people on here have got plans to own supercars, but a lot of those saying it dont have a wife and kids. You'll find that your projected salaries wont pay for the supercar lifestyle, and a wife and kids and all the stuff that goes with it as well. The supercars and nice cars end up going.

Well, for all those apart from maybe the top 1% that can afford the lot....
