Ideas for a first car..

It's a 2 grand car, who honestly cares? It's not worth anything to lose in the first place. Why are you concerned about how many hundreds you might lose in depreciation when you have a budget of £2700 for insurance which once you paid you will never see again?

I am not paying for the insurance. I don't 'want' to be spending that much on insurance obviously.. but can do if it the car is worth it and is going to do me for a fair few years.

EDIT: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1566263.htm?

Your parents are going to pay THREE THOUSAND QUID for you to insure a car?!

Obviously.. my dad does not want to shell out that much really. But I wanted a car that would be suitable for the future and not just for a year after passing my test and if that means a high initial cost then I guess so.

Seriously this is quite possibly the most daft thing said in the thread.

I guarantee that you will be utterly bored to shreds of your first car in at most 12 months, probably sooner if you get a low powered youthmobile™

Don't waste your time trying to find something small that will last for years, as quite simply, you won't want it for that long.

So.. no point in spending good money on a 1.6 Zetec Focus then? :p

A Focus is a bit more than just a crappy girly JustPassedYourTest© car. And if you can't get one insured for less than two grand, your'e doing it wrong. Seriously, have you tried quotes on a 1.6 Focus / 2.0 Mondeo yet? :)

so if I'm in a similar situation but insurance is a lot less painful, is there anything else I should be looking at except a 2.0 focus?
(it's group 8 and would cost me about ~700/year to insure)

Do all 17 year olds think in exactly the same way when it comes to cars? All these threads seem to go exactly the same way

Yep. As Fox said in another thread, the nation's obsession with tiny little hatchbacks baffles me :(
