Just bought and built my first computer in over 5 years this week. I have installed windows 7 and updated the motherboard drivers, and 5770 drivers. I haven't touched anything in the bios. Because to be honest i don't really know a lot about bios settings.

Problem is my 5770 sits around 47degrees idle which i think is normal isn't it? Within minutes of running Napoleon total war the temp of the card goes right into the 90's with the fan at almost full speed. Surely this isn't right is it??

idle is still high for a single card, some 5770 dont make full conatct with the gpu. you can always use the chance to take off the cooler apply some new TIM and reseat, i would assume that will do the job

after opening the case again and looking at it. The very front end of the card isn't pushed in all the way due to the metal on the case preventing it. Its a coolermaster 335. Don't know if anyone has had this problem? Might have to do a spot on DIY to get it pushed in properly and then try it again.

well its pushed all the way in now. Tried it again and the temp is doing exactly the same thing. Just gets loud, and hot very quickly. Faulty card?

ok so this morning i changed the connection of the card to the psu. Also had a look at it with the case open and everything seemed to be functioning fine.

When i turn my pc on it starts at around 40-45c fan speed 35%, doesnt move from this until i either put a game on, which within a minute it increases to 80-90c with a very high fan speed, or even when i go into 3d section in ccc, it increases by at least 10c within 30secs.

Whats going on?

Use GPU-Z to log the temperatures and fan speed whilst playing a game.

I had the same problem, but on a different card, which was definitely faulty.
Sent it back and got a fully working card with normal temps and the fan doesn't go much over 40% even at full load.

To sum up, i'd say your card is faulty.

I have no problem buying an extra fan, especially if its only an extra tenner. I did try it with a game with the side panel off though so any built up heat would immediately be expelled. Just worried at the speed at which the temps increase, it really is 40c-90c in under a minute. And thats only the opening credits of the game.

My cpu is running at very low temperature in the case. I'll try the gpu-z idea.

My XFX 5770 sit idle at 45 but thats with fan to only 20%. When gaming i only put the fan up to about 40% ( any more and it to loud for me ) and it never goes more than 80.

Do you have the fan on auto ? if you have enabled manual fan you might just need to knock the speed up when gaming.

Edit: Don't get a new case fan, if you can't keep the card under those temps at 40-50% (idealy 40) fan speed id deffinatly says it's faulty

These are the stats after less than 1 minute of me starting up Napoleon Total War. By this time, the opening video was still playing and the start menu hadnt even appeared.
