A colleague, and a friend, is on the mainland with about a week to live from lung cancer.

Last saw him a few months ago. Gone down hill incredibly fast, and writing an email to him as he's too ill to talk on the phone. I've tried to keep it upbeat and light hearted - giving him updates on the island, local gossip, things he'd appreciate. But how the hell do you sign off a letter like this? I don't know if he'll get the chance to reply, but don't want it to be depressing, or final etc..
I suck at things like this!

Let him know exactly what he means to you as a friend, and maybe reminisce over some good times, and funny moments that would make him smile and laugh.

Jeez that's a hard one. I'd probably go for something like 'always' as mentioned above. You obviously want it to be different from something generic.

I'm with britboy on this one. Depending on how well you know them I'd keep it informal, after all they are a friend and you're not writing a complaint letter.

On another note, my condolences. Stuff like this can be very very hard

'good luck with it all'

if i recieved that when i was dying id be like, yea thanks douchebag, i wouldnt say this.

To end frivolously would just be patronising to the person considering their condition, you know their condition and they know their condition don't pretend it's not there because it may be the last time you ever communicate. Show some of the pain you feel but temper it with what the person means to you.

I always liked;

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. -Sobieski & Meehan (Unfortunately from Annie but still one of the finest 'Goodbye' lines I have ever heard :( )
