• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

;)

then why have people been so stagnant in their decisions ?

the whole point isnt for technologies sake its for gaming fun right ?

Absolutely, the problem is that there are hardly any good games for PC anymore. Mass Effect 2 was 'OK' Bioshock 2 was 'OK' - but even those were not games worth upgrading for seeing as both of them run really well on older hardware. 95% of what we get are console ports with some minor alterations or DX11 stuff tacked on.

The only game i will even consider upgrading for is Mafia 2 (the first game was one of the best PC games ever made imo!) and that's not coming until the end of the year, maybe even early 2011.

I am actually interested in a GTX470/480 for CUDA, but the cards will have to be really well priced for me to buy. It would be a quite a huge benefit in the modeling apps i use, but even then it's hard to justify spending £400 or more for me (it's just a hobby, not my job).

You should post them up and argue why you think they are real, instead of making random posts with nothing to back it up.

I will be astonished if the GTX480/GTX470 doesn't hammer the 5870 and 5850 into next week. Looking at the cores side by side ( and forgetting about Nvidia's monumental cockup ) a GTX480 should give the 5970 a hard time.

I never said they were real. My point was the huge ATI fanboy following in this section are very quick to point and laugh at them being fake or unfounded, yet the one in this post is treated like its real. Either Charlie from neveraccurate is a mad shagger and he has a few cast offs in here or this section is redder than red.

"In the end, the card is too hot, too slow, and unmanufacturable. We told you so. Pop goes the ego.S|A"

If he ends up right, I can't wait to see the reaction of people who rubbished him (Rroff, Duran, Deuce etc, looking at you guys ;) )

As for the performance of the 480, mmm let's see, less than two days from release and still no official performance figures, now why would that be...maybe because it is only 10% better than a 5870 and NV are embarrassed to say so and may scupper initial sales, though that won't stop the fanbois sucking em up..

Oh great ! another Nvidia fruit loop to deal with.

There could be two reasons for that.

1. This. G100 is actually not that much faster. In this case nVidia would suck up and try to be quiet, hence no benchmarks for this close to release.
2. It is way faster, even than 5970. In this case nVidia might just be waiting to stab AMD. It could also be that all benchmarks pictures that we've been shown with marginal performance increase of 480 over 5870 are just fake to delude AMD and make it feel they can relax and not worry too much. This, however, seems unlikely as nVidia is no Apple and don't have very good record of hiding real performance.

All in all my prediction is:
- 470 performs from 0 to 10% slower than 5870. Priced at 250-299.
- 480 performs from 0 to 30% faster than 5870. Priced at 350-399.

In any case I am not buying an AMD card. My GTX285 has always been able to play everything I tried maxed out. So if 480 is not much faster than 5870 there is not point upgrading. If 480 IS much faster, I'll just go for it.

Theres a few people in here just as bitter lol... don't mention nVidia 9 series it seems to trigger repressed emotions.

How could a thread with the title ";)" turn out to be anything other than a complete waste of server space? Surprised it was created to be honest, especially by a OcUK employee.

Who will buy a GTX480 Fermi card if its £500-£600 and is 30% faster than a 5870 ?

Taking into account the manufacturing difficulties.

Plenty of people will, should see the number of deluded facebook fans posting on the nVidia page... if even half of them put their money where their mouth is nVidia would make a killing.

Personally I'd have no problem paying £500-600 for a card that was 30% faster than a 5870 if it did the job I need of it, but I'm planning on giving first gen fermi a miss.

I really really don't get why you guys are ****ing off at each other. Why do you even care to convince ATI/nVidia fanboys they are wrong? If you think ATI/nVidia is better just buy their card and be proud you've made a right choice and everyone else screwed up. I certainly don't give a tiny rats arse what kind of card "that dude over there" has got, and neither should you. Well, unless you are like 10 or 12.
I imagine this thread getting closed any minute now.
