;)

There is no point being fan boys. Just buy whatever one is faster for the price point. The market is going to change all the time, sometimes ATi will have better cards, sometimes nVidia. Being a fanboy is just retarded.

The few leaked benchmarks that have emerged seem to indicate a small (10 to 15%) improvement over the 5870. As always, the difference will vary from game to game. We have nothing concrete though, and there won't be anything until Friday.

Its just another NDA getting lifted isn't it ?

I only prefer NVidia due to BFG. If they did ATi cards and offered the same warranty and RMA process I would have got a 5870. Damn shame they've gone under in Europe :(

The ironing thing is true.

I have been avoiding mentioning where I work - and its not PC World or anything like that - because (a) I work at more than one place which makes it complicated to explain on these forums because people are going to pickup on different aspects of things I've said in the past and apply it to the wrong job in attempts to ridicule me (b) theres too many children on this part of the forum who will ridicule my main job because they don't know any better and they have enough ammunition already.

The "ironing" thing REALLY isn't true.

You may have shared a moment with your brother where it was said, you however weren't the "instigator" of that "meme".

Secondly, you don't mention where you work out of fear of ridicule? Firstly, I doubt many really would ridicule you unless you were some sort of gigolo, and secondly, be the bigger "man" about it.

I know you probably think I make fun of you at every opportunity, however as I've mentioned, it's all fun and banter until you have a moan about it yourself.

I like to make fun of Nvidia for their silly marketing schemes, but I dont have a problem with buying their cards if they are better for the money .... that just hasnt been the case in a very long time since I stopped paying for £300+ cards and realised that buying the <£150 ATI cards in twos worked out a lot better.

I dont go saying either company is better though, just which product is currently better for the price, just like with Intel / AMD.

One day I can be an ATI fanboy, the next day a Nvidia fanboy =D. But for now, Nvidias Fermi delays and renaming schemes are just lolworthy, just like the ATI 2900 and Nvidia FX 5000 ranges were (Those kind of failures from any company I like to make fun of).

Yes I am a major geek who plays chess and minesweeper :(

that fair rroff, i expect there will be a refresh somewhere down the line, also oc versions have been comfirmed (well, confirmed that the AiB partners are planning them).

I want to order some instantly on release if there is fsk all stock, but i also want to wait for reviews, so im hoping reviews/pre-order on friday, cant actually get them till 6th april, gives me time to cancel if it sucks lol.

AMD are on a roll lately, even if nVidia doesn't come out with something fairly soon AMD/ATI aren't far off - obviously this cycle happens all the time, but this time its likely to be substantially shorter time wise than is normal, so personally I'd rather wait it out this time around.

yea, but i need to get better than my current set up, and i cba with getting a new mobo/cpu in order to do so, so ill have to stick with nvidia for a while yet.

Fair enough, personally I don't upgrade quite the same as most people seem to do, so it doesn't make sense to me personally (I tend to give away my old cards to friends/family rather than sell and spend the whole lot upfront)

Only reason im considering SLI 480s is the resell value of my 295s + blocks. Normally I upgrade my pc, put old card in my spare, and that one in my htpc etc etc. Which means I now have 4 PC's lol

I'd be suprised if you couldn't fund that almost entirely off the 295s they still fetch a premium right now to the right people.

I were also considering buying something new because ATi AIB partners have started churning out rubbish 5770s now, and lots of people are looking for V1 versions, so the resale value of mine might have gone up, but I'm not paying £220 for a 5850.

£180 for a 5850 or £400 for a 5970 are the prices that I would buy those cards for, but I dont think they will ever cost that much (5830 should be £150, and 5870 should be £250). IMO all the 5800s are too overpriced.

Thats wrong. Nvidia need 18 months - ish to develop the Fermi replacement. The clock started ticking about three weeks ago. But you already know this

If you are going to wait for a High End Fermi replacement, you have a long wait ahead of you.
The replacement for Fermi will have been in development in parallel in to Fermi, so unless it's been delayed as well then it will likely follow much sooner than 18months.

They're all over priced, by quite a lot too.

The 5850 needs to be £160, the 5870 needs to be £200 and the 5970 needs to be around £320 with the supposed 5990 £400.

The current prices are what I'd call atrocious really.

It's unfortunate that the exchange rate has bombed so much since the 4 series.

The current RRPs aren't THAT much off what the 4 series was, except there's mass price gouging due to demand surpassing supply and the poor exchange rate too.

indeed. I am hoping for around 400 per card+block, which i dont think is too bad tbh. All depends on the price fermi comes in at, f it was randomly cheap then id obv lower my prices. Then in april I can afford waterblocks. Should be a nice jump in performance if 1 card = similar to a 295, because of the extra vram helping a lot for my res, also ess overhead for my cpu on quad sli and better scaling etc.

Seems like a bit of wishful thinking to me considering that's not far off RRP considering how long they've been out.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if some idiot with more money than sense did actually pay that out.

The prices are WAY off! I bought my 4850 (factory oc version) for £100 ~4 months after they launched. The 4870 was £175, and the 4830 was about £75.

So both the 5830 and the 5850 are more than twice the price of the cards they replaced, well over 6 months into their lifetime. The 5870 is not quite twice the price, but it's not far off!

edit: just noticed you said the RRP, i'm not sure what they are at the moment, but the street prices are absolutely insane.

you realise that its with an EK full cover block that are over £100 new as well? (except on this week only atm on ocuk lol)

That's what I meant, RRP of them both.

The EK block for £100 and GTX295s have been £300 retail at one point.
