There was a scene where the "demon" slams the door shut and then hammers on it from the other side as if it is trying to get in. This makes no sense because we already know that it can open and close the door whenever it wants to. So why close a door just to hammer on it from outside?

I think you're looking at it too logically, the demon is tormenting the girl, if he wanted to harm them in some way then I'm sure he could have done right from the start. In fact the exorcist chap says something like the demon 'feeds off' bad feelings, so I imagine the torment night after night is what it needed to do to be able to take control of her towards the end.
