I have just cooked my card - 8800 Ultra - and I need an NVidia replacement. Since I have no idea how to compair these things I'm looking for advice here.

Any suggestuons? I need at least equal performance. Nvidia would be preferred, buy ATI would be considered.

Thanks in advance....

ATI 5750 or nVidia GTS250 would be similiar performance.

ATI 5770 would be a lot better for not too much more money.

Other than that, not much choice on the nVidia front as they are mostly EOL.

Have I cooked it... well it has screen corruption at bootup and whilst it sort of works at VGA - with multicoulured blots and lines - thats about it. I have seen several screen shots of identical artifacts where the general opinion was "its dead".

I have:-
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Extreme QX6700
Microsoft® Windows® XP Pro
ASUS P5N32-E SLI nForce 680i SLI(C55XE) Mainboard
2048MB DDR2 900MHz Memory
1000W PSU OCZ

and I am told a Nvidia card would be best on this Mb.

Putting the card in the oven sounds like revenge... does it really work and how critical is the temp?

(EDIT - screen looks exactly like this one *** )

180 for 20mins...revenge hell yea haha shouldnt of died on you...

Either way your going to replace the card so whats to lose? Iv heard many success storys about this on these forums :)

Dont forget the mustard ;) ...jokes

EDIT: you need to upgrade that mobo aswell mate.. the you need an ATI 5770, though givng us a budget will greatly help :)

my ultra died recently, it was an asus and still had some warranty left on it so its RMA'd atm, got it back and it died again, so another RMA

I decided i would move on and got a 5850, im very happy with it. When i think of what i paid for the 8800 ultra and what i paid for the 5850 i feel that nvidia slightly ripped me off, but i did manage 1920x1200 for almost 3 years

Budget upto about £250 tops.

I dont really want to change the MB at present if i can help it since thats a bit beyond my technical ability.

I'd wait for the Fermi launch if you have that kinda budget, see how things look then, unless your really desperate for a card, then see if you can find a 5850 around that price.

I need it now, as the machine is unusable as it is. What about Nvidia Cards? The GTX 260 seems to be about the same performance (so I'm told)- any views on that?

GTX260 is on its way out now, not worth spending the money on with next gen cards on the market (DX11 support, etc.).

Umm..ok but my needs are very simple and besides I'm still on WinXP 32 and I have no intention of changing till forced.

How about two cheaper cards (SLI)?

Don't bother with cheaper SLI - anything worth getting* when compared to the 8800 Ultra would be pointless when you could get one of these cards:

But thats a lot of money to spend now on something that doesn't do DX11. The other alternative would be to source a cheap GTX260 but most places seem to be out of stock for those - and they are unlikely to get any more stock so don't wait for it.

* http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-026-PV&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1402 you could SLI a pair of these but a single GTX285 would be more beneficial.

Bob, do you have any warranty left on your 8800 Ultra? If you do and sent it away for RMA then you will get a replacement of equal or greater performance. Since 8800s haven't been made for a while you will likely get a much newer tech card that performs just as well (more likely better) and is cooler, quieter and more power efficient.

Alternatively, wait till Saturday morning and see how good/expensive the Nvidia GTX 470 is compared to a 5850.

If you're really desperate for a card, then get a 5770 as it's the best for price/performance, or a 5850. Although tomorrow the GTX 400 series from Nvidia will be out, I would wait for them to see how well they do before you decide on what to buy.
