The Pacific **NEW TRAILER**

Dont see why thats a problem. I mean if someone wants The Pacific on bluray, it will cost them around £70 or something. Not much difference imo.

I think you could argue the case there is a big difference between the 2 , but its about convenience as much as anything and how much thats worth to you. If your already subbed to Sky Movies, then its not much to worry about, but if your weighing up the pros and cons of subbing for 3 months to watch them ..

Blu-Ray - video / sound much higher bit rate + resolution difference, i.e Blu Ray @ 1080p
Blu Ray will probably have DTS MA / HD or Dolby True HD perhaps not for everyone, but anyone with surround kit especially that decodes HD formats would appreciate the difference.
Extras , documentaries etc.
A lovely shiny case taking up room on your shelves.

If you sub to Sky Movies just for this and Sky+ them, i believe once your sub runs out you wont be able to rewatch even its saved on your Sky Box Hard Drive. So you'll be in effect paying more to watch lower quality versions over a finite amount of time, perhaps only 3 months if thats all you've gone for.

No idea about watching them when your sub runs out, never tried. But I burn my recorded sky stuff onto DVD, so no reason why someone couldnt do that if they really wanted a hard copy of it.

Having said that, I really wouldnt recommend that someone buy Sky movies just for The Pacific. Theres lots of other decent movies on Sky, so paying for the Movies and then only watching The Pacific seems remarkably wasteful to me. Would be akin to paying to enter a theme park and then only going on one ride :D

Hehehe very true.

I think thats what happens, i took on a 3 month trial of Sky Movies and Sky+ a bunch of HD films to watch later, as soon as i ended the movies sub, i couldnt watch them !

Maybe, though Band of Brothers stayed high in price for quite a long time. No rush though I suppose so someone could always wait a year or two and pick it up then cheaper.

Yeah, you are not wrong, I taped it off the BBC when it first came out and lived with that for years and years until the dvd set came down to £15 in one shop so I bought them.

I can see the Pacific remaining at a high price for a long time. Rip off I know. It's a good excuse to get a new telly though, just got to decide which one!

So how is downloading a TV program and different from recording it and putting on a dvd for someone else to watch ?

I'd love to get sky but can't because the cottage im in has no line of sight for sky, and virgin cannot install cable because the landlord will not allow them to dig up the private driveway.

Its no different at all. Whats more, I never said it was..unless you can point out to me where I said it was different????

The part of your post that I quoted was the section where you said that the problem with The Pacific was that it was on SkyMovies at £28 a month (to which I mentioned, quite accurately, that the cost of it wasnt all that much different to the cost of buying it on Bluray). You made no mention of the fact that you couldnt get sky due to physical location, your post seemed to suggest that it was the cost of Sky which was the problem.

Its unfortunate about your physical location and the restriction set by your landlord, for you there isnt really much choice but to wait til the DVD/Bluray release. On the plus side, the show isnt going to be scrapped and never come to DVD/Bluray, so it wont be going anywhere :)

Some people are making it (watching a tv show outside of its region and then talking about it) out to be the worst kind of crime ever.

Some people would say that as its any "kind of crime", it should be avoided. Then again I guess , like with little lies, little crimes are acceptable. Personally I'm not massively bothered if someone watches a show in advance and then talks about it. As you say, its hardly murder. I just think its impolite and inconsiderate (unless in a clearly defined (and moderated) spoiler thread, designed for precisely such purpose) and that its very easily avoided.

Hi all,

I've not looked at this post since The Pacific came out due to the fact i don't have Sky & i want to wait for this episode in June when its out on DVD etc.

I just wan't to know!

Is it living up to BOB (Band of Bros) standards? or is it too early to tell?

its alright.. im a bit of a war buff...but i dont really like, or should i say, appreciate the Pacific theatre like i do the west or say the eastern front.

its all very samey and one sided. sure the production values are good, but you know theres no fear of the luftwaffe storming in, nor armoured divisions or tigers/panthers making an appearance...

its that variation i like, in the pacific it was more of a slugfest of infantry proportions.

If you like war stuff you will love it.

As for spoilers, it is bad crack if you come on here and talk about particular episodes and what happens, but who is doing that?

Fair enough if people say they are watching it through some other means and say its amazing, hardly a spoiler.

Then again I haven't read what everyone has posted... so sure someone may correct me :)

Anyway, I love it and will definitely be buying the blu ray boxset

Must admit that I prefer the "european" theatre too, not sure why but it might be the variety as you say (that and I find the Germans more interesting than the Japanese). Having said that, I would like to learn a bit more about the pacific theatre, so hopefully this will help a touch in that regard.

I think the producers were expecting this, as each episode has quite a lot of historical information at the beginning. They have about five minutes of black and white footage, with Tom Hanks narrating, and then they follow that up with the real-life interviews like with Band of Brothers, before the actual episode begins.

Basically, if you do want to learn more about the pacific theatre, there's plenty to go on. :D

ya, the US saw the east as their front...or so they said at the start of the episode.

but fighting the japanese was kinda boring from a neutral standpoint... they were an inferior army, with inferior weapons... they were destined not to win whilst the germans were being pushed back.

dont get me wrong, it must have been horrific fighting in the east. but watching that type of war is not much entertainment.

i like films like Tora!Tora!Tora! etc and battle of midway but these are more pacific fleet air arm/navy not island hopping soldiers.

I love BoB but the one thing I could never do was follow all the characters, I lost track of who was coming in and who was getting killed. I have it in the tin box set, and have seen it maybe 6 or 7 times, yet I still can't do it.
I know this will be the same, however it wont stop my enjoyment either way.

This made me laugh - go and watch a doc called Hell in the Pacific, a 4 hr piece from a few years ago made by C4 or ITV. One of the best and most shocking I have seen. Does the whole culture of the Japanese military, military prowess and imperial expansion - it will make you think twice about dismissing them.

The Pacific War was really a massive combined arms offensive, there was a much bigger naval presence than in Europe - the only 5 aircraft carrier battles ever, plus arguably the biggest naval battle ever occurred there. If you concentrate solely on the Army and Marines you miss out on two other dimensions.

For example, on Guadalcanal, ultimately the US won there because the Army/Marines held Henderson Field, so the Cactus Air Force could control the skies around the island, so the Navy could control the sea and get supplies and reinforcements in and the Japanese couldn't.

Two of the biggest Japanese bases in the Pacific, Rabaul and Truk ("Gibraltar of the Pacific"!) were neutralised purely by carrier based air, which gives you an idea how important the naval air service was.
