I have got fed up of my slow noisey HDD's and have decided to take the leap over to an SSD. My dilema being, Will a 40 gig Intel X25-v be enought? i have never really kept a close eye on how much space my 'vital' programs take up. OS, Drivers etc.. So in your opinions would a 40gig SSD be enought?

I ask as im considering biting the bullet and opting for a 80 gig X25-M.

Also would steam be a lot better if i loaded it onto a SSD?

Currently Im using 35.1GB of space on my C Drive, without any games, so if you choose to only install the essentials, i.e. firefox, office etc then it will be close, if you can extend to the 80 gig X25-M it would be better :)

You're not kidding Stulid. I just checked my Progam Files (x86) directory size and it's a tad over 29Gb. Opened that and found Steam is 26Gb of that and I only have 4 games and a couple of demos in Steam.

Yes, but how big is your steam folder going to be in a years time? Mine is 202gb at the moment. You should keep a backup of your steam folder anyway, and you could just keep 3 games installed at any given time. But faffing round shifting files across all the time you want a change of game kind of defeats the object of a speedier load time. Plus the usual 1 in 10 chance steam decides it doesnt like your 1/2 year old backup and wants to re-download the hole thang again...

And games dont really take that long to load on raid0. Have the OS and browser on an SSD is something I'd like a lot. But with a 53gb OS partition at the moment, I would imagine faffing about trying to always stay <40 would be like the computing equivalent of being on wieght watchers counting calories. And I'm not spending £190 on an 80gb Intel just to see my browser take .04 seconds instead of 4 to load.

I like hearing when people who have them state its the best upgrade they have ever made. I need some motivation to get one later in the year when hopefully the 25nm leap halves the price on existing stock. One can hope, anyway.

I have a 125gig SSD and I have most of the software I use most on it and a couple of games. It has around 80gig on it. I put steam on another drive.

I feel that a quick boot doesn't justify buying a SSD, you need to get the full use, so a bigger one is needed to get all the stuff you want quick access to on it.

My two bits

Cheers for your views.
looks like a will be needing over the 80gig to get full use from a SSD, as it iscurrently i couldn't really afford 80 so the 160 if out of the window.
*starts waiting for prices to fall *

Thanks, thats saved me some monies

I have 2 60Gb SSd's in RAID for Steam, they're nearly full. And 1 60Gb for my OS and everythin else, thats got 25Gb free.

40Gb is no-where near enough, you'll wish you bought a bigger one after a day

I have a 64GB for my OS, and it only has 22GB of OS and programs on there. I don't have steam on it though.

However I do tend to download programs, not use them, and then then clear them off my SSD, so it seems to stay relatively "clean". Also, I don't really have any large software packages, such as adobe suites, so that would bump up the size.

I wouldn't recommend below 60GB though.

I've got a 40gb version and I must admit it is pretty close to using all the space. I'm looking to get either the 80 or 128gb ssd
