XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5

You tube is the best place to start, take it slowly till you reach about 75c full load. I have had this 860 to 4.768 but was getting very hot evan with my cooler.

Okay cool, shall give that a whirl tonight.

I assume because my systems already overclocked ill only need to up the cpu frequency and voltages, run prime and watch the temps ?

was thinking of getting a 5970 (overclocked) thread up sometime. If I can get sometime tonight (been extremely busy at work), I'd love to set one up. Hopefully peeps in our forums would participate! Would really love to see a nice bench comparison!

You bet your ass. :) run vantage and 06

You might be better starting over, Save your setting at the min then take about a day just reading and looking.... Its taken me years of blowing CPUs and Mobos to just dive in ...

What you will find as i did it will be stable with Furmark and stuff like that but once you get say above ??? 1000/1250 it will stugle with full BMs like vantage and unigine. mine will go to 1000/1325 but gets right to the last stage on Unigine and freezes.

Keep us posted on the final (100% 24/7) clocks you reach.

I use 995/1200 24/7. Temps are 4c idle and 20c after 1 hour burn test

thanks danny

Im just thinking of getting one of these bad boys for my new WC build as Im really happy with their performance.

I just dont understand the huge difference in price. Some are going at 500 quid while others for 600?

If i was you i wouldnt get the 59. I dont see £200 inprovement from a 5870.
Plus unless you pay the £100 for the 59 water block you cant get anywhere near the clocks.

Hey chaps.

Apologies in the delay of my screenshots etc. Halfway overclocking yesterday my brain just fried and I really had to go to sleep. Plus I swear my missus had aggro eyes when she woke up and found me glued to the system.

Played around with the clocks a little here and there. Suddenly hit me that I might not be doing it right.

Here's a list of the programs I used.

XFX Overvolt Tool
CPU Z
GPU Z
Furmark 1.6
ATI Catalyst

Issues so far :
Screen stuttering on my displays when I'm surfing the net. I'll be upping my 2d clocks later when I get home from work.
Computer crashed a couple of times when I rebooted though I then later found out because of my clock speed 950/1300 I have to quickly rank up the voltages in the overvolt tool as soon as I booted up otherwise the PC will crash. Voltages used were maxed out on my overvolt tool. So I had 1.1625 and 1.15 (max) on the XFX overvolt tool.
Temperature wise, the card idle's at about 29 degree's. When it was loaded at those speeds it went up to about 49 degree's after 20 minutes with Furmark.

Just in case I mucked up because I was playing with it from 1 a.m till 9 a.m, I resetted the clocks back to 725/1000.

Unfortunately when I woke up, I was playing BFC2 and Dragons Age the whole day. I couldn't move from my seat! No problems whatsoever. No crashing no stuttering. Haven't got fraps installed yet but It was very smooth with all settings ranked up.

I guess my aim tonight is to try and get some stability tests in and properly overclock the card.

I plan to use
MSI Afterburner
CpuZ
Gpuz
RealTemp
Furmark
Vantage (though I have no idea where to get a proper version as the one I downloaded only lets me install a trial for a one off test)
Mark 06

Now I haven't used MSI Afterburner before. And everytime I look at it, it seems theres no way to set up the voltages as it always seems to be zero on screenshots? Or am I being a fool?. Having said that, I have no idea on what sort of voltages I need to overclock the card. So I just maxed it out using the XFX overvoltage tool anyway.

Will post some updates tonight.

How are the rest of you getting on so far?

Not really overclocking mine matey. It's at 775/1150 stock cooling each GPU. I'm happy with that for now because im buying another 5970 soon, so overclocking will be too extreme.

As for your voltage issues matey, i dont think afterburner will allow you to change ur 5970's voltages. XFX tool will, though as you know.

Quick tip with the XFX tool, i havent put this to practise but adding overvolt to start on bootup should apply your voltage settings on boot, savng you from upping voltage when your system starts.

Oh lord I just realised something incredibly stupid.

Have i only been overclocking one core? I just change the cores on ATI Overdrive. Does that overclock both cores? or just one? And it suddenly struck me that I haven't seen the word crossfire anywhere. Is this something i need to enable? GAH trust me to overclock after 24 hours without sleep.....

Hey Dissy! Yup i will try that tonight to see what happens!

had any screenshots of you system yet? I've got a couple in my build log but I'll be uploading more tonight!

Maybe matey :)

You can select each core (or graphics card as it see's in overdrive :) ) and change it's clockspeeds. because the 5970 is 2 gpu's, it's seen as two seperate cards, and overclocking one wont overclock the other.

Should be a drop down to change the GPU in overdrive when ur doing it :)

Nah not yet, bit of a mess at the moment. Your system is beautiful :)

And yeah u "kinda" need to enable crossfire.

Open CCC and goto 3d. then goto all. then move the catalyst ai over to advanced.

You can check crossfire status / each core's clocks with gpu-z
