When I had an nVidia GFX card device manager showed me it was an 8800GT
now that I have a 5870 all device manager states is its 5800 series:mad: so how do I know what I have installed without having to physically look.

2)
I have a sound card also but cant see that either in device manager, any clues to where it is or how to prove via the screen that I either do have one or dont have one?

apologies if these are really basic questions

1) 5870 is part of the 5800 series, it's just not being specific but it is correct.
2) Have you got all the latest drivers installed?

well for number 1 you could download a program called gpu-z from here http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

that will tell you the details and temp of your card

and for number 2 just check the back of the pc ;) if there is a row of audio jacks below the graphics card then you have a sound card, if the only audio jacks are up near the usb sockets on the back then you have integrated sound

Try downloading GPUZ for your graphics card and I believe Speccy gives pretty detailed hardware info for the other stuff.

You would obviously know....you bought the thing lol
Click on what you want to update then click on the 'Driver Tab' and update...or just go to manufacturers website.

Do you get somebody you don't trust to upgrade your PC, or just curious as to where this info shows up in the OS? Lol :)

You should find your sound card under 'Sound, video and game controllers' in device manager. That's XP - may be different for Vista/7. Do you actually hear sound?

I dont get your problem?
It says 5800 series...whats wrong with that?
Do you think you have been ripped off or something? If your that worried take the side of your case off and look at the sticker on the card.

calm down dear:p

Its simple really and not a problem just an observation. Lets say you build a system for a complete non interested user, tell them you put in a £300 5870 but you stuck in a 5850 5830 or whatever, they will never know without taking off the cover which they will never do.............its not right IMO but some people just accept whatever they are given:cool:

also lets say you want to upgrade your GFX card, you dont know to what cause you DONT KNOW WHAT CARD YOU HAVE!!!!

get it now?

Yeh i get it soprano....But if your a non interested user then you wouldnt be upgrading the pc anyways would you? you would be asking someone who is more knowledgeable who would then be able to tell you what you need.

Almost!! they would then do it but you cant CHECK it as its a GENERIC 5800 series.....I'm a USER and dont give a monkeys right one how to install or build but I do want to know if I have what I paid for
