Hi guys,
I'm looking to get a new car. I'm in Dubai and a lot of the cars here are US as they're a lot cheaper. However I've got no idea which ones are best?

My Requirements
Price 60k-80k AED (£11k-£15k)
need to be able to commute 200miles a day @ 100mph
if it is a 4x4 I'll be going off road
fuel and tax cost not an issue

The cars I've been thinking of are
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Landrover LR2 (Freelander)
Nissan Pathfinder
Lincoln Navigator
Ford Explorer
Ford Mustang GT
Dodge Charger
Porsche Boxter S
(the ads aren't ones I am greatly interested in, I just grabbed one to give you an idea)

Anyone know anything about any of these (especially the Yank ones), are the Yank SUVs any good off road? Do any of them cost a lot more to run than the others (guessing the Porka will)

Cheers,
Hamish

Yea, I often find myself trying to decide whether I should buy a 2 seater Porsche Roadster or a Nissan off roader.

Seriously, what a pointless thread. Have you considered an LWB Mercedes Sprinter or perhaps a Smart Car?

Erm, yeah, ok, whatever.

if he has to goto Abu Dhabi/Oman or something I'm sure thats not uncommon, the speed limit is 160kph on these freeways.

I'd go for a mustang as you'd get quite a bit for your money.

Sorry, but if you could explain this to me I'd be greatful.

You'll get a newer Mustang than you will a Boxster S, and it'll be "larger", but "quite a bit for your money"?

No.

If you were going to buy a Dodge, for the love of god don't buy the butt ugly Charger, go for the Challenger, it's much better looking and well ...much better.

Newer, cheaper to run, yet still 300+bhp. We don't know if Hamish is a full on vehicle dynamics maniac. I'd say it's more of what he wants. I think you knew EXACTLY what I meant.

I guess you'd rather have the 9 year old Porsche, I wouldn't. :)

Out of the cars you have listed we (Missus and I) have two, the Mustang and Freelander, now as much as I love my Mustang I wouldn't want to be doing 200 miles a day in it. It does handle long trips with ease and is more than comfortable on the odd occasion but day in day out doing 200 miles? no thanks I'd opt for the Freelander (out of the two).

Although as commented about it seems your requirements aren't all that clear and your list of cars is varied to say the least. :D

OK then, basically think of my post as 2 questions.
1) in my circumstances would you get a 4x4 or a sporty saloon/roadster. i.e. is a 4x4 a pain to do long journeys in.
2) out of the list of cars which is the best in each class?

I have to say i'm leaning towards the Jeep or the Nissan, both seem big and chunky, good value for money and I think I fancy a high up driving position over the feeling of a low down sporty position for day to day use.

Erm, yeah, ok, whatever.
I'll be commuting Dubai to Abu Dhabi, its a dead straight, 6 lane, 100mile motorway.

Yet more aggro from the intolerable Bimmer crew .

Wtf? Have you been to Dubai?

Hamish...

4x4:

Saloon:

Try some out and see if the 4x4's ability to go off road outweighs the (potentially) reduced cruise comfort, as that's a lot of miles to have to do in something that isn't very comfortable.
