Average Speed Cameras

I think this was true with the very earliest ones, but is a bit of an urban myth these days. One thing that is true is they need to take the average speed between 3 sets of cameras though.

I drive on A14 every day but am only on it for 2 junctions so no matter what my average speed is the cameras cant catch me :)

google says yes lol!

well the two articles I looked up.. its amazing.. someone needs a good kicking for that..

unless its a big lie to increase the number of fines :)

give it a try...

let us know if you get done so we know if its true on not...

just noticed one of the articles was from 2006... im sure they upgraded the firmware on the cameras by now...

On the site of who makes the cameras it recommends that you stay in one lane, so according to that it wont pick you up if you change lanes.

It was a legislation problem, not a hardware issue (I have family that works in all things traffic lights and speed cameras) but I don't know if that loophole is closed yet...

My friends dad works in the industry and apparently that "loophole" was fixed a long time ago but there is another (virtually impossible) method to avoid the cameras.

If you straddle the lanes and position yourself halfway into each as you pass the camera then it will not match a full plate as each camera is set to a single lane... BUT you have to be perfectly on the line of the "virtual lane" which the camera uses and not the physical white line seperating each lane as the cameras are not mapped directly to the lines of the road...

Useless fact but I suppose you could use it in a conversation in the pub or something

Stupid thing about them is they read the plate on the front of the vechicle. The only vechicles capable of speeding during rush hour on the A14 are motorbikes, and yup they dont have plates on the front......

Or make sure you Exit the avg check zone next to a lorry. In some cases the cams can not see the outside lane if they are the temp ones as they are too low.

The old cameras worked in pairs and would essentially fail when you switch lanes. However, the newer networked cameras track you through all lanes (and also, be warned, take an average of average speeds between checkpoints - so 1mph past three cameras will not allow you to do 100mph for the last ;)).

Had that happen last night on the way back from Stansted Airport, Average speed check area, not much traffic and a bike goes hurtling past everyone :( Can't grumble as I know I'd probably do the same.

Oh and the A14 is bloody horrible at the moment with all the cameras and road works :(

It really bugs me that on the parts of the M25 with roadworks no one has realised that where you have to drive in what would have been the fast lane for oncoming cars the cameras can't see you and continue to drive at less than 50mph.

Aye I know the parts, right around J28/J29/J30 at the minute, grr!

Why the hell not - just drive through them at 90 swerving between lanes, driving licenses are easy to come by..much less valuable than a minute of your time, right

I've had to put up with the ones on the M1 ( J25-28 ) on a daily basis for almost 3 years

The roadworks were due to end in October but I have been told it could be as early as late April

They are being replaced with variable speed limit cameras though :(

So, how does that work on a motorway, with 3 lanes, but typically only ever two cameras?

There a load of b***** anyway...

Same, always working in notts. But like ive said, there a load of b*****. Always stick to 70+ when i can and i have never had a letter come through.

Watch out for the camera vans on A500 too. Takes a bloody age to get up to Stoke or Hanley now, as I get on the D road at Talke so as soon as i get on the D road I hit the speed limits :(
