ATI 5870 2048 MB EYEFINITY 6 PRODUCT LAUNCH - IN STOCK NOW FROM £429.99 inc VAT

They're definitely overpriced for a consumer card of its performance. I think they're targetting this card at the wrong market, surely it'd be a better proposition to make a 5450 with 6 display outs and target it at the business market?

In the anand review, they used 6x1080p screens and found you had to trade quality/texture settings for pixels.

So you need 2 at least.

So the extra memory isn't really necessary unless you buy two...

They'd have been better off releasing a standard 5870 2GB without all the Eyefinity crap; and a 5970 4GB with the 6 ports etc. for £700-£800(?) because as most people have argued it's a specialist thing anyway.

I can see one need for these cards if you have/intend to run apples 24" LED as they only have mini-dp ports. And if you can afford £700 on a 24" tft i'm sure you can afford an extra £100 for a card.

Are these cards longer than the normal 5870?

Am I seeing this right? The 5870 is now the same price as the GTX 480? What do the ATI fanboys say about this????

Its in stock, it offers far more features, it will be massively more available and its still cheaper than the 480GTX will end up. The 480GTX prices are being heavily controlled right now, IE price them above what Nvidia wants and you won't get stock it would seem. The 5870, 1 and 2gb version and 5850 are less strictly controlled and people are price gouging the crap out of them.

OCUK are making a killing on these, and other cards, as shown by the store that sold a few to forum members at £250, they will not have made a loss on them, which should tell you what cut the retailers get on these cards.

In reality these should be about $50 more, you'd still be utterly stupid to buy anything but a 5850. The 5870 at £300 is overpriced, 5% more speed once overclocked, 10% best case scenario, 50% higher price. Unless you need more power than quad fire 5850's theres no reason at all to buy any card above a 5850.

Both AMD and Nvidia sell the same cards in professional editions for $1k +, do we care about that, or halo products, or overpriced editions you don't have to buy? no, I can get 5870 performance, and 5870 2gb performance, from a £200 5850. I can not get 480sp or 448sp performance from Nvidia, for sub £300 at all(and likely £350).

I've never cared if either company produce a £28k pound " gold platted heatsink" edition, its about what cards are available at what value and AMD give us an option of top performance for lower cost, Nvidia do not.

I mean even a long way back a 8800gt was pretty damn good pricing, while they also sold 8800 ultra's at insane cost and little more performance.

They come with mini dp to dp/dvi/hdmi adapters. :) You don't need apples hilariously overpriced lcd or vice-versa.

6 screens are pointless more than 1 is pointless until they can get monitors without bezels, just looks daft.

In your opinion of course.

There are uses for multiple monitors where the intention isn't to have one massive screen.

I truly don't understand how you are meant to use this card, 6 displayports?

They come with mini dp to dp/dvi/hdmi adapters.

They do? Whats up with all the active dp to dvi converters that are £60+ (for one port) then?

Edit: Nevermind, there seem to be loads about now. Strange!

This is overpriced, and is more or less the same speed as 1 gb 5870's, and how many people are going to buy and use 2 to 6 monitors!!,
but i am interested in the Saphire Toxic or Asus 5870 2gb, aslong as it doesnt cost more than the already overpriced gtx 480's

This is why it is such a shame that Fermi is a flop. ATI should have responded with a faster 58xx part for the same price and reduced existing part pricing. Instead, Fermi underperforms and costs too much, so ATI creep prices up.

Well, obviously they think some people will use 2 -6 monitors, this isn't supposed to perform better than a normal 5870, its for people with more monitors and higher resolutions as a result, hence the extra ram.

I use two monitors but a normal one is perfectly fine for that.
