Having placed an order for a 5870, I'm wondering if theres any 3rd party coolers around since the stock cooler is rather loud.

Artic-Cooling have some very good ones on their site, cost quite a bit think about £40 or so but they are very quiet and good.

Arctic cooling got roasted in recent reviews for VGA coolers so look before you buy at reviews im pretty sure it was custom PC and the arctic cooling killed there 5870 :S

Depends what brand card. EVGA and XFX both allow you to fit waterblocks or 3rd party coolers i think.

Alright, will have to have a look into it a guess.

Unless you know a link which has all their policies laid out to find easily which companies allow and which don't?

Mostly CustomPC being tools, as they are basically.

The cooler is more than good enough for the core, however you really have to use a separate and decent VRM cooler. I still don't think CustomPC managed to kill their card within such a short space of time with the vrm cooler that comes with the Arctic cooling sink, they just screwed it up would be my guess.

You'd think the new version actually designed for the 5870 would come with a more substantial VRM sink, its not available yet, only just been officially announced, no reviews or stock anywhere yet.

The thing that makes it laughable is the current Arctic cooling sinks simply fit the mounting, they were out before the 58xx cards and fit it, they weren't designed for it. THeres a couple dozen reviews of the same sink showing VRM temps get very silly with the supplied cooler, yet CustomPC managed to not check other reviews, didn't use any common sense and killed their card.

I do not trust them at all, they rated some cpu coolers very badly that people use a lot here and are very good.

I am very sure arctic-cooling vga coolers are very good, i've looked at online reviews and i've seen good ones mainly.

Like here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2009/07/24/arcticcooling-accelero-xtreme-4870x2-review/4

That one is more like the ones being released in april/may.

Sorry i dont mate but a quick look on google should come up with the goods. I know my old EVGA card allowed blocks etc to be fitted and im pretty sure XFX do as long as you dont damage any stickers etc.

Its £320, I found the reference Sapphire model for £270 on another site.

Well it's worth it if you want a silent pc, not wish to change cooler yourself and very good temps. My temp is usually around 55c whilst gaming, 32c or so idle and that's with autofan only.

I can only really hear it if i raise fan speed to 60% or more.

Exactly the reason I've ordered one ;)

It's not that I have a problem changing coolers, but I've spent so much time on my current setup that I just want an easy life with the graphics card!
