Nokia N900

Wow N900 dropped back to the 4th page...

Anyone overclocked theirs from 600mhz yet? Mines currently running at 750mhz and sees quite a bit smoother. A few people over at maemo.org have overclocked theirs to 1ghz!! lol

Battery use is kinda unknown yet.

I can't see how I would benefit from it running faster and wouldn't want to risk borking it :p

But I'll have a read ;)

I've noticed the web pages load faster and the navigation is a lot smoother also.

I've had my N900 for a few weeks and really need to get something to protect it. Anyone have any recommendations?

I'd like something that will protect against the inevitable accidental mistreatment that happens when a 3-year-old gets hold of a phone!

Which is better for protection, crystal or silicon, or a leather pouch/case with some stick on shield? Is the InvisibleShield as good as it's made out to be?

(sorry if it's earlier in the thread, I searched for "case" and saw nothing obvious!)

Thanks.

Cheers guys, might check out the Invisible Shield then cause tbh I'm quite liking not having the bulk of a leather case like I had on my N95 (Nokia CP191, fine for using in the hand but a real pain when holding the phone to your ear!)

Pipboy theme is kinda win imho. :D /geek

Anyway, lots (and I mean LOTS) of nice stuff in extras-devel at the minute, downloaded a lot of it to try and help get it through to testing.

Irrco is a very nice app, like a universal remote control in your phone. Finally something to make use of that infra red port. Definately reccommend it.

Numpty Physics is there too... ;)

Is there any reason why apple headphones don't work properly with the n900, and the n900 headphones don't work with an ipod.

Took my skullcandy headphones that i use at the gym with my ipod to the hospital with me to use with the n900. one side didn't work so tried my gf's iphone headphones that she carries round with her, just got a highpitch noise. Thought my headphone jack on the phone was broke (which really annoyed me). it wasn't till i got home 3 days later and tried another set of headphones that i realised my skullcandy's were broke and the apple's just don't work with this phone. Seems the n900 headphones don't work with the ipod either as i took them to the gym the other night as i've not managed to get a replace set for my ipod yet. Only seem to get half the sound, unless you press the buttons in the wire.

Got a link to that theme mate, or is it in a special repo? Can't seem to find it :)

Also, what's that funny icon below your Wifi?

Its in Extras-Devel: (Development, meaning might brick your phone)

The software hosted in extras-devel is not ready for normal users!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't play with it unless you really know what you are doing. Be ready to file proper bug reports instead of posting complaints.

Expected problems: crashes, battery drain, poor system performance, full disk space & more - SERIOUSLY!
Don't play with Extras-devel if you haven't backed up your data or aren't prepared to re-flash your device.

How to activate Extras-devel

In the Application Manager:

1. Navigate to the application menu (tap the title bar)
2. Select ‘Application catalogs’
3. Select ‘New’
4. Enter a catalog name of ‘Maemo extras-devel’
5. Enter a web address of http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
6. Enter a distribution of ‘fremantle’
7. Enter components of ‘free non-free’
8. Select ‘Save’

Note 'fremantle' only has one 'e'.

Anyway, yeah, I fixed mine from a bricking using the Windows flasher, so I'm happy enough to fiddle with it + report bug.....and there is bugs, dont bother with Theme Hospital, OpenTyrian or the copy of Stellarium in Devel, they dont work, and Stellarium will just crash your phone. I dont even dare try the overclocking app! Though for the most part, a lot of it works fine.

The wee icon is cpumem-app. Guess what it shows! :p Not really neccessary, I think I only put it back on when fiddling with something, never bothered deleting it again.

Theres a wee app called "Auto Disconnect" in Devel. Very handy that one, disconnects idle connections, I'm terrible for leaving them connected. :)

So I just got one of these yesterday. Managed to lose my N97 while away for the weekend (seriously) and when I went to make an insurance claim to get a replacement they told me the N97 isn't made any more and they have none in stock, and none of my local carphone warehouse stores have one in stock so I'd have to drive to Luton to get one. I told them to get stuffed and they suggested an N97 mini which I also refused as it's too small.

Then I suggested an N900 as a possible replacement, they agreed and sent me to Newport to collect it.

Win.

Symbian really does look like a clunky piece of crap in comparison and I'm still finding my way around the phone and figuring it out. I like how the very first app it offered me to install was adblock plus. Apple would never allow that.

Anyone recommend a decent dashboard mount. Looking for something I can stick above the instrument cluster that will hold the phone in landscape mode, either open or shut, and still allow the camera a view of the road ahead.

Preferably something designed specifically for the N900 since most of the generic ones look awful.
