An iPad Thread.

I am however thinking of replacing my flagging home laptop with an iPad. I use the laptop for surfing the web and email and frankly not a lot else, the iPad fits the bill and I'm sure others are in the same boat.

That's all I do too many at home, if only it could have widgets on the desktop and Adobe flash, I would get one.

I'd rather not have the thread locked guys, will be good when members start getting hold of theirs so can we keep the crap to a minimum please?

Really?? you really think it's a useful device? a device with no USB, no flash support, over priced, limited fuctionality... at the size and price of a laptop. A laptop which can do way more.
.

Way more which a lot of people wont use.
It's the same as paying £30 for a phone contract to get 2000minutes when you only use 200minutes.

Use it is very useful web-browsing, emailing and a very apps. Is what a lot of us do on the sofa and on the go. All the extras from a laptop detract from the usability due to size and keyboard and the extras are unused and just add complications to the device.
I have a PC which can do everything. I don't need to do everything sat on the sofa.

A usb would be nice, but really what would you use it for? It'll have a cable to connect to a computer, even then I'm not exactly sure what for.

Same with camera apart from people who skype I can't see why you would want a camera on it.

Flash seems like it's only major down side.

As this guy said

I have a high end PC rig for my Photo editing and c#, I wouldn't dream of doing eithere on the laptop.

And i never said iPhone was useless, what i meant was the iPad is basically a oversize iPhone.

BTW i have no doubt it will sell well, especially with people around that will buy anything Apple, no matter how utterly useless it is.

A desktop machine can do a lot more than a laptop for a cheaper price, are you trying to say laptops are pointless?

For me personally it will be an extremely useful and ergonomic device, mainly due to it's form factor, this will replace my 5kg laptop that that is good for about 1 hour battery life and is far from portable, all I really want it is a web tablet, just a very sleek, light panel that can just pick up, touch the screen and be surfing the net within seconds with an easy to use and intuitive interface, anything else that the iPad others in terms of apps will just be a bonus for me.

To highlight, the main appeal for me is the 'form factor', that's what I'm paying for, not the functionality.

Exactly and a lot of people seem to miss this, very very few people need a portable device that does everything.
Most people don't even do much on a desktop.
trouble is there's a lot of elitism when it comes to computers on this forum and people are so blind to how normal people use computers.

Use it is very useful web-browsing

How is it? as said it has no Flash support, and over 70% of the most popular websites use Flash. Some sites are all Flash. Then theres the limited browser fuctionality i mentioned on the previous page. So in this regard a laptop is clearly better and has the options for faster typing and multiple browser and plugins support.

Then for E-books, you have the kindle which is better for multiple reasons i wont go into.

The you have smarthpones which will do pretty much all, if not more than what the ipad does depending on OS.

So again.. why bother with iPad?

Most website do not use flash integrally, most are just embedded videos.
Smart phones do not have a big enough screen to use comfortably.
Laptops netbooks, are not comfortable or ergonomic to use.

You're points are not at all valid... You can get thinner a ligher laptops that are the same size as the iPad, so it has no advantage there either. Try resting an iPad on you lap or a table and typing... how is that going to work? as the screen will be flat on your legs/table/surface. So it's no even as usuable in this area.

For Flash, yes a lot of sites just use it for video, but there is literally tons of sites still that are all Flash, and literally many thousands of Flash games. And theres the limited iPad browser fuctionality. So again, less useful than a laptop/netbook.

Just ignore the fact that you have to have it unfolded with a keyboard. Which isn't comfortable or useful for what many of us would use a device for.

It'll be fine just liek using a smart phone. But easier.

As i said flash would be nice, however:
Personally I don't use flash games, also games are available on apps.
And about the only site I use with useful flash is BBC and BBCF1.

But mainly it's not about which is better, they are two different products.
For me and many many others an Ipad (or similar) is what we want, not because it is apple, but because of it's functionality (a different list, compared to what you have).

Obviously what we deem important isn't for you, you deem Customisation (which we don't need) important. it will not be what every one wants. But to say you should always go notebook is ridiculous. they are totally different devices.

And the vast majority of those laptops will be running Windows, which is overkill for the average computer user, confusing and time and time again shown it's not secure.

So the iPad is the perfect replacement for a lot of computer users that just browse the web, read emails and check Facebook.

Dude, your trying too hard, show me a laptop that is as thin and as light as the iPad, and if one exists show me the price of said laptop, and also don't forget once you open a laptop it's twice the size straight-away and I barely even use the keyboard on my laptop, and I honestly don't care about flash, there is not one site that I visit regularly that needs it.

Will the iPad be able to play .wmv, .avi and all other types of video?

Apple Site said:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Dude, your trying too hard

I think you guys are trying too hard to convice yourself it's worth buying.

Put it this way.. and this is for all of you.... if this was not made by Apple would you really consider buying such a useless product? If someone admits that they would not buy it then, i'll repect you atleast for that.

You would have to be a fool to buy an iPad, no two ways about that. All the points in that post i made on the previous page should have made that clear enough.

And i am a web developer, graphics deigner and 3D artist, but sadly a lot of other people in my line of work are surprisingly computer illiterate and like to waste hundreds of £'s more on inferior handware (which is all standard PC hardware anyway now in macs) for the sake of having a apple logo on there machine.

Funny, IM actually a Graphic 3D design producer and also have work in producing and remixing tracks as well as producing advertisements in a deadline conscious workplace, that cant use PC, because or reliability and poor work flow, so umm...actually...the point of macs is that we don't have to be bothered about all the stuff in the background, ya know, the stuff ya don't use for production. SO instead of wasting hours over work time sorting conflict problems or hardware driver conflicts (PC coundnt work under the Furtre Proofing system that we use in Advertising production, cause all those nasty TIFF and PSD and Ai files that Pcs dont nativity like.

The entire floor went back to MAC....irony being was that it was supposed to save the company millions dumping the macs for decent PC that where better specced but realized the payed hours per week sorting PC problems out across the company cost them more than buying us all iMac MAC PRo desktops.

So dont try the 18 yr old never worked in a big production house with work that has to be done in 5 hrs to dealine/ print, because ive been there, done that, worked it and ive been a team leader for the 3D/ Sound stuff for nearly a year now, so I know my stuff more than you could ever imagine.

In fact ive come to know that anyone that uses that remark as a selling tool for PC's have never really worked in the field.

Well if someone wants to buy it, surely it's not useless.

But yes, if someone else made a product this good, with the attention to detail Apple pay to every aspect of the device (hardware and software) I'd consider buying it.

The same way I'm considering the Windows Phone 7, because Microsoft finally get what people want in a phone and they've actually made a UI that I want to look at and doesn't make me want to scratch my own eyes out.

Ohh and ill be getting an iPad if I Like the price and Apple dont go and completly screw us, and I know a lot will be bought for work for presentation stuff and to run Demos for clients.
