Hey guys want to get into guitar playing =D would like advice on the best brand of guitar for a beginner? And any hints and tips for me to get into this instrument?

Just so some people don't think I'm a headless chicken...I have some musical experience, ain't great but experience is extensive. Playing drums and a little keyboard and some other instruments from Indian and African backgrounds.

Budget?

Nothing wrong with buying used. You'll get a better guitar for the price and if you buy from an experienced player he'll probably have it setup nicely too.

Unbeatable. I'd say try it a bit before you commit to buying a guitar, but just for planning ahead what would you want - acoustic or electric? What sort of music do you like/would like to play?

Oh, and people will try to tell you that you need to spend tons on a guitar or else you will end up crying. They're wrong. You can get tons of decent models for under £100, as long as they're set up correctly and from the right places.

am looking to start off on acoustic...appeals to me the most. and want to play things like blues, chilled, jazz. and i would say my budget is £100, thanks for supporting me on the budget Superewza =)

you know any stores/websites that i can look for this? budget around £100 but if i can get a nice one from a experienced player, wouldn't mind £200. but wouldn't want to miss out learning tuning etc either =)

I can't recommend the Yamaha FG series enough for cheap acoustics - really nice guitars for the cash. :)

Edit: The FG700 seems to be the cheapest model in the range. A bit over budget at ~£160 though...

if i can get enough people to vouch for the FG700, will definitely look into it, thanks for pointing it out mate, looks nice too.

It's probably easier learning on an electric, but acoustic has its advantages too. I've seen a lot of people learn from scratch basically on some sort of Yamaha or another.

Like Super says, acoustics are generally a bit harder to play than electrics (slightly thicker strings and higher action), but don't let that put you off, a decent quality acoustic like the Yamaha will be miles better than an Argos type beginner package. :)

Started playing myself about 5months ago, its hard going but im sticking with it.

Got myself a Yahama pacifica electric which is great for beginners and there are some really good offers around on them.

Justin guitar website is great and ive learnt most of my chords etc from there, i decided to go electric as its supposed to be easier to play, havent looked back.

When i can start to play a whole host of songs ill get myself an acoustic.
I can only play.. wild thing, knocking on heavans door and house of the rising sun at the moment, although im also learning the finger pickering method of house of the rising sun and getting quite good at it :)

Yeah, but cheaper electrics are far better than cheap acoustics... you could do well with a £100 guitar and a £30ish amp.

But just because it's a little harder doesn't mean you have to use electric. If you want to use an acoustic then go ahead, there are advantages to it. Like, when you do move onto an electric it'l be easier to play.

yh i was thinking if i start off on the 'hard stuff' like acoustic, then my potential to move onto different things like electric will be much easier, might as well get hit with the tough end of the stick now :P

I started out playing with a Squire Strat which was great for learning the basics, only cost 150 for the guitar and amp.

When I first started learning I never even crossed my mind which type of guitar to get (acoustic or Electric) though I heard that the electric was easier to play so thats why I bought that first. why make it harder for yourself, finger strength will come with time.

Either way let us know what you decide on. As well as justin guitar, try ultimate-guitars for all your tabs for songs

that's a really good site, thanks Morrell!

I've been getting good reviews on the acoustic Yamaha FG700, think I will be sticking to the acoustic guitar, yes it's a little harder, but the transition in future will be much easier after practising on the acoustic. Think I will pop down to the local music store today and have a go at both, see which suits me. Will keep you all informed! =)
