New Build wanted by my bro. 1st time build for me.

General Usage - Net, Media, Photoshop etc. Mostly Porn.

With that in mind. I would like to deliver a nippy and fairly silent desktop unit.

No need for a monitor.

Total budget (to everything from win 7 to cable ties) - £300

I would like some advice as to how I should go about splitting the cash. I am pretty keen to spec the job myself but would really appreciate some percentages.

So you you're telling me you need everything but the monitor? Case, mobo, processor, ram, power supply, graphics card, hard drive, mouse, keyboard, speakers, operating system, etc.. You think £300 is gonna get all of that..?

Tight budget, but I reckon you MAY be able to throw together a system to meet your needs for that price.

However, do you have any spare components you can re-use (eg IDE DVD Drive, spare HDD (even an external one), old ATX spec case, DDR2 RAM etc)? Anything like this will mean you don't need to buy new and can dedicate more of your budget to things that matter (PSU, CPU etc).

Also, are either of you students so eligible to get Windows 7 at a reduced price?

Edit: Whoops, are you also needing keyboard, mouse and speakers? If so - that may push the project into impossible land. Or worse - nettop territory *shudders*

I did think it was a long shot mind. Ive seen a reasonable zoostorm E7600 for about the money.

I would suggest £350-400 is a more realistic figure for that type of machine. Youre gonna need 4GB RAM for Photoshop...mind you, depends how he will use Photoshop I suppose.

You may be better off trying to find a pre-built computer from somewhere for that price margin.. Or something used from Ebay is worth a look too.. Or if you could get your hands on say a mouse, keyboard, speakers.. £300 would be do'able for say the case and everything else inside (mobo, cpu, ram, hdd, gpu, psu)..

Go buy the cheapest prebuilt system OCUK has, I just got one, does all that stuff for very little effort.

He still also needs a mouse, keyboard and a pair of speakers though as well.. :/

there would be no need for speakers, keyboard, monitor. I could possibly salvage the cdr, hd perhaps. He has an external one so wouldnt have to be big.

Also, are either of you university students? Because if you are you can get Windows 7 for £25 less than you pay at retail. This money saved would be of great help on a spec with such a tight budget.
