The way i see it is the PS3, financially, is still a big failure for Sony, they've lost millions overall. I'm sure the execs are watching the product very carefully at the moment, trying to decide whether it's worth letting the playstation brand continue into the PS5 (PS4 was under development before the PS3 even launched).
If people catch onto this and millions of PS3 owners flock to their respective retailers, demanding their £80 and then the retailers pass this cost onto Sony it's going to be a huge blow for them. They're either going to need to recoup the costs elsewhere by charging for more features which are currently free, or just give up the ghost and let Microsoft take over the 'non casual' gaming market.
If someone legitimately made use of the OtherOS feature then demanding compensation is more reasonable however.
