Polish president Lech Kaczynski killed in plane crash

Truly shocking news :(
I saw it on the television at work this morning, and I could not believe my eyes. It is a real tragedy. The Polish take much more stock in their politicians than we do with ours - for them it is a terrible tragedy and possibly the worst Polish political event since World War II.

Each and every single commander of every branch of the Polish armed forces were on that plane too. Along with the president, a sizeable number of the Polish administrative cabinet were on board too. The seriousness of the situation cannot be profoundly stated enough.

It is highly unfortunate for Polish-Russian relations too - no doubt that the conspiracy theorists and the tin-foil hat brigade will come out of the woodwork in mass numbers, helping absolutely no-one.

Rest in peace all those who perished in the crash, and God speed to Poland as a people and a nation.

I dont understand how this could have happened. (..) But what I have heard (BBC TV news) is that the pilot was told the destination airport was socked-in (fog) and he was given a suggestion to divert to the alternate airport. But from the looks of things he elected to try and land.

In 99% of situations like this one, diverting flight is simply not an option. It's not like the plane with head of the nation, large portion of his cabinet and every single commander of every branch of the armed forces heading for Russian Federation can land 300 kilometers away in different country (nearest airport was Minsk), obtain tourist visas in Belarus and then call 44 x minicabs to create casual motorcade through the entire Wild East heading to their destination deep in Russian black forest. It's just not how those type of travel arrangements work.

Clearly the pilots were told to land, considering both highest commanders (head of national air force and the president) were onboard it's not impossible that such order was issued directly. Pilot attempted to land multiple times despite conditions to finally fail. TU-154M used as Polish Air Force 101 and 102 is not without its notoriety either. In 2004 the plane carrying Polish Prime Minister Mark Belka suffered fire to the engine during taxing around airport. In december 2005 then president Aleksander Kwaśniewski was stuck for several hours in Vienna awaiting for new plane while the presidential tu-154 was grounded due to electrical malfunction. In december 2008 the same plane with now tragically killed president Lech Kaczyński en route to Japan had to perform emergency landing in Mongolia, due to malfunctioning flaps on both wings.

The "trip computer" of crashed TU-154M indicated 5004 hours of flights and 1823 landings. Polish Government was the only one in Europe still using Tupoliev machines. Overall TU-154 aircrafts were involved in over 60 different incidents and tragedies around the world.

If the same thing happened in this country it would be a day of national celebration.

You'd really celebrate if four of our most senior politicians perished in a plane crash?

I'm not one for respecting the dead if you didn't respect them when they were alive, so I suppose I can understand that. :p

Say what you want, but it is tremendously disrespectful. Even moreso so close to his passing.

Cool, i'll remember that next time someone talks about Stalin and Hitler.;)

(No i'm not comparing the Polish president to them, just showing how your point is silly, just because you have nothing against them doesn't mean they are "good" for everyone.)

Brown, Darling, Jacqui Smith (retired I know), take your pick.

I wouldn't celebrate the death of anyone. If I absolutely had to condone somebody's passing, it would be that of a murderer or a paedophile, not a politician no matter how corrupt or greedy they may be.

Am i the only person who think that paedophilia should be acceptable if they don't infringe on the rights of others?

I'd far rather celebrate the death of somebody like Hitler, or Thatcher (which i think i just might) than that of somebody who had a fetish.

Are you being serious or are you really that retarded?

Why is he retarded? Martial law in the event of the death of the elected leader is perfectly plausable.

Given the number of important people that died I would consider it an emergency, wouldn't you?

It is ok to celebrate the death of people that deserve it, but there is a difference between disliking someone and them deserving death.

Anyway I don't think there is anything dodgy about this, other than the plane perhaps.

I think restore Concorde and use that. It had a pretty flawless record overall.

It was more on grounds of treason that I mentioned those names, rather than corruption or greed.

It should be reminded that the commander of every single branch of the armed forces are dead too.

First of all safety first. What does it mean things don't work like this ? The lives of those onboard is the top priority . The fact that 60 incidents are associated with tupolev doesn't mean they are bad planes , under what circumstances these accidents took place ? Was it pilot error, terrorism ?

Real tragedy to happen :(

Would never call Tupelovs unreliable, like all mass producers of something of this type, they have their problems, but no more than any other, in realistic terms.

Wow, going to be a bit of a shake up! Also, RIP :(

Actually, I agree, although I obviously still think paedophiles who actually go and rape kids are disgusting and fully deserve punishment.

bbc seems to think most weren't related to plane itself:
