RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.

Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.

Dawkins and Hitchens believe the Pope would be unable to claim diplomatic immunity from arrest because, although his tour is categorised as a state visit, he is not the head of a state recognised by the United Nations.

They have commissioned the barrister Geoffrey Robertson and Mark Stephens, a solicitor, to present a justification for legal action.

im guessing the inevitable "Dawkins and Hitchens are doing this for themselves and their own egos" comments will come but at least they are investing their time in doing something we can all agree must happen.

Can we just see Dawkins put in the stock instead. His own ego boosting will cause a diplomatic incident, but hey, at least he will get some smug satisfaction out of it.

I'd love to see him try to have an Israeli or Islamic religious leader arrested.

can we get dawkins arrested for inciting religious hatred?

There's a difference between shouting bad things about a religion (however you want to dress up 'inciting' - I'm yet to be convinced that inciting anything should be a crime) and covering up a child sex scandal.

Did he commit the act?

How about if your father committed terrible acts against children? Would you go announcing it or try to keep quiet about it?

He's never been tried, so we don't know.

And bad analogy much? To answer, I'd want to see him locked up.

I'd expect Hitchens to try an undergraduate stunt like this, but I thought Dawkins was more mature. Anyway, if they really want to get noticed, why don't they team up with the many Christians who also want to see the Pope arrested?

wow. How about if your father raped children on a continuous basis of which you were aware of? You would do what exactly? Sign an order saying if your father went to the police to confess his crimes he would be extradited from the church I mean house?

Is the Pope Catholic? And making the world safe for pedophiles?

Does a bear **** in the woods? And does the Pope **** on the broken lives and dreams of 200 deaf boys?

South Park allways seems to based on truth, everything I goto look something on from the show its mostly true. :D

I wish them luck and hope these vermin are brought to justice, one way or another. Their not above the law and should be reminded of that fact.

*fingers crossed* hopefully they'll at least try to bring charges, and that'll mean that at the very least the coverup will gain masses more publicity as the media continues reporting on it.

I doubt anything will come of it directly against the pope however :(

This is the best news I've heard for a long time, and I certainly hope it comes to fruition.

Why shouldn't a state leader, institutionally involved in the covert cover up of criminal activity (I could mention the fact I believe it to be the most heinous, despicable kind of criminal activity, but leaving that aside) be tried for his evil doings? It's an absolute scandal that Brown and Cameron have welcomed the Pope with open arms saying that they consider the visit 'delightful' and that the British people are glad about it.
