earliest game that got you hooked?

I started on a Apple Classic in 1989 which was bought for an incredible amount of money even by todays standards by my dad. I played a game called Crystal Quest a lot. The first PC game I played was Wolfenstein 3D then Doom. On the Megadrive it would be Sonic. PS1 it would be Gran Turismo.

Properly hooked: Might & Magic VI which I think was 1998

I loved that game, locked away in the darkness for a whole Summer, curtains closed. Constantly searching for artifacts, expensive stuff... :|
There was some heavy resentment on one sunny day when I was forced to go outside. :D

Prince of persia -sega genesis
Final fantasy 9 - PS1
F-22 lightning 3 -PC (so much so that accidentally i returned it then bought it again then lost it and then bought it again)

Some of the answers people are coming out with are making me feel really old, and I'm not even 25 yet. I'm sure I just skipped across a guy who said Mass Effect.

i wouldnt say i ever got "hooked" on pc gaming

but my first awesome purchase and I hadn't even heard of the games was the first Age of Empires and Diablo II - good times.

Then for a good long time Age of Empires 2: Conquerors was my favourite game, played it endlessly in 1 player and online

edit: oh ****, forgot about worms armageddon, jesus i put so many hours and took days off school to play this game online, got up to Elite rank if anyone remembers the online rank system they had, :D

Nethack. I first started playing in around 1992 (after playing the predecessor, Hack, for a bit). On a couple of occasions I played for eight hours straight, and it was common for me to come into work at the weekend (unpaid, so no loss to them) for a few more hours play. Until around 1998 it was pretty much the only game I played. I still play occasionally, and if someone ever produced a 3D version with Oblivion's graphics or better I'd probably starve rather than stop playing.

Used to play games like Quake and Diablo online when i first got seriously onto the net but out of all the games these three have made the biggest and best impression-

Quake2 first game that i played like an addict, i used to go on it when the wife watched soaps and next thing i knew it was daylight outside the next morning

Tribes2 this game was the dogs ********, thinking about it its the forunner of games like Battlefield ? the number of pack/class options was brillient, deffo had a steep learning curve but it was well worth the effort.. :)

Battlefield 1942, pure class at the time, so many hours of fun..

For me it was Baldur's Gate. It came free with the first PC my parents bought, and is still one of the best game's I've ever played. It also made sure I got BG2 as soon as it came out and that was even better :)

I had played other games on friend's PCs before that but BG is definitely what got me hooked.
