Do people see the same colours?

I have had this conversation with a few people before and my housemate brought it up again last night

Do you think colours look the same to all people? I dont think there is a way of ever finding out the answer.

For example, when I am younger my mum or dad will have pointed at the grass and told me "that grass is green" or I might have seen it in a book. I automatically associate this colour of 'green' with anything that looks similar.

Whats to say that my 'green' might look like what someone else sees as my 'brown'

Maybe in future this could be worked out when we know more about the brain

Some people are color blind so this may effect it, other people may see a lighter/darker shading of that color, abit like pc monitors display the color shading/brightness differently.

I've thought this before! I know what you mean. If I see red as you see blue and something is pointed out to us as children as being 'red' then we would just associate whatever colour we see with the word red. We could all have the same favourite colour!

its all about perception. To me this forum colour is a dark blue, but to you its just a normal blue. The colours we both see are the same but your experiences in life make you see them differently to me.

I think that's how it is anyway i remember doing something about it in school.

This. Yes, this forum might be 'blue' or 'dark blue' but whats to say my blue looks, to me more like someone elses red.

A nice head scrambling question for a hungover monday!

It's like trying to describe a colour to someone born blind, how would you do it? They have no point of reference.

I have thought about this before, I'm red green colour blind as is my brother (must be in the family!).
Always wondered if i see colours different to most people and how wierd it'd be if they had some "magic glasses" which would change it all around :p

If you had 100 swatches of 'blue' and asked thousdands of people to pick out ~blue~, you would get a variation.

I suspect most computer literature people/designers would pick out 0,0,255 though :D

Is 0,0,255 the OcUk blue?

Also OP I have also wondered this myself. It would be interesting to know what colour people see things as. My blue, might be your green, but we both recognise it as the same colour :\
