Couldn't find a related thread.

I recall an awesome country instrumental band from back in the mid '90s that I really enjoyed, but I have no idea who it was. It is one of those, "I'll know it if I hear it" dealies, so I'm hoping this thread will reveal the band's name to me.

So, target bands/artists such as Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and such and their particular style and see how many we can come up with in this thread. I think Eric Johnson would have been the closest to what I remember, but I can't find a song like it so far.

No vocals, please. Video links would be awesome, just like a nice playlist. :)

edit: I found a track from an unlabeled demo tape from back in 1994-1995. I apologise for the quality - I just ripped this from cassette 15 years after. http://www.mtariders.com/images/04_Rockin.mp3 (6.7MB and it doesn't stream. Sorry.)-- edit again: I violated my own rule about > 3db peaks. I have to rip that again. :o

Eric Johnson (on a good 'ol Crestwood, innit?):

Steve Vai:
Will always be my favourite. The sounds he can create are just amazing.

Joe Satriani:

^ Perfect examples. :) I've never heard of Andy Timmons but he's awesome! Paul Gilbert I've always liked, totally forgot about him.

Have some Yngwie:

It's hard to find stuff I really like from him. His concerto suites tend to sound cheesy.

edit: that 2nd video is Kevin Dotson, intro by Paul, isn't it?

Here be Paul:

Saw Steve Vai live in Wolverhampton Civic Hall (I think) about 10 years ago (OMG! I feel so old now!)
Is a small venue so the audience was right up close. He has such amazing skill!

Some more Paul Gilbert.

Viking Kong

Norwegian Cowbell

The mighty Guthrie Govan

Wonderful Slippery Thing

Waves

Waves with incredible improv.

Hah hah!!! I love how he pulls off the cheesy early '80s sound near the end of that!

Just incredible, guys. Keep it up. I'm glad everyone is understanding the heart of this thread. *sniff*

More Stevie. You have to wonder what he's going to do with that rig...

I love the faces he makes. Dana Carvey was spot on with his play. :D

Sorry about the short burst of vocal, but the bass line makes up for it during that point. :)

Both excellent.

Cheers!

Are we just posting our favorite instrumental guitarists or are you actually looking for the country band mentioned in the OP? :p

Check out a track called Hot Wired by Brent Mason, also Albert Lee, if you want some good instrumental country. The band you're looking for could quite likely be something Steve Morse was involved with.

Anyway, some instrumental guitarists I like:

Brett Garsed - Brothers, check out his solo album called 'Big Sky', he has a new recently announced solo album coming out soon.

Chris Poland, check out his band Ohm:, he also played with Megadeth for a while.

Hopefully some of these are new to you Raist :)

Both. Developing a nice playlist here, and just hoping to stumble upon the artist I'm looking for. :)

Brent Mason sounded very much like the style I remember. I'll snoop around and see if I can find something he's done that I recognise. Thanks!

All new to me. Excellent!

probably unknown here but extremely versitile - Steffen Schackinger -

fantastic compositions with obvious influences, but amongst the plethora of widdlers and fretboard maniac's he does stand out.. enjoy

Satch and Lindsey Buckingham spring to mind ;-

I think it's going to hard to top Guthrie, as he really is the man.

Let's try though. :D

One of my friends introduced me to this guy the other day, and he's pretty darn good.

I don't know if you're into your jazz, but if so check these out:

Pat Martino is one of the finest guitar players alive today, he creates really amazing music.

And some more, but somewhat more funky.

Some great videos in here so far.

One of the things I like most about Paul Gilbert is his sense of humour. Some guitarists (especially ones this good) have a tendency to take themselves far too seriously.

Something a bit more experimental:
