Always. Whether it saves my life or not, there's also a number of degrees between dying and just getting painful bumps - if I fell off, I think I'd much rather my helmet than my head hit the ground. :p

It also makes me feel a bit safer cycling around in the US where you are alongside massive great trucks :p

Off road - yes

On road - no.
Reason - if I get hit by a car @ 60mph then no helmet is going to save me.

Sorry OT, but that just reminded me of the same discussion on BR when one of the US posters announced that he always wore a helmet in case he got 'sucked off by a greyhound at 60 mph'.

I stand corrected! I just bought some new cycle lights and they do state that it is illegal to have them on flashing on their own! And sorry, no box!

Tbh the laws regarding lights have been so wishy washy for so long that i wouldn't be surprised if some light manufacturers don't even know what is legal or not.

I keep hearing this as an argument. But i'd be surprised if that many cycling accidents are a car hitting you at full speed. Most of the time it's them turning into you causing you to hit the deck or something else.

Nope i dont, i just cant see the point in wearing one that only protects the top of your head, when you could clealy mash up your face/jaw/teeth etc, And to rid that problem id want a full face BUT it would look stupid as hell riding around on the road and so on. Simple fact is yes they protect the squishy bit inside, but whats protecting your face etc. and getting severley injured from that . 1 example a serious slash and losing quite a lot of blood etc.

What about the car that doesn't hit you full on, only lightly bumps you and you fall on your head or your head hits a pavement, dont you think your flux woud have stopped you getting seriously hurt?

I don't understand why people think helmets make you look stupid/retarded. What's the worst that's going to happen - somebody you don't know points at you and says "ha, you look stupid"? So what? The majority (I'd say 80%) of cyclists in Bristol wear helmets. I even had a guy pull up next to me in the cycle bit at the front of traffic lights and and say "hey - nice helmet" (we had the same one) :p.

I guess survival of the 'fittest' works in this situation though :p.

Sure it wasn't just that your bib shorts were too tight?

If figure if I wear a helmet some folks might think I look retarded but if it reduces the chance of me eating meals through a straw then that's fine with me.

Some lol replies in this thread, its protection, how many people that dont wear a helmet drive a car without a seat belt?

Why when you have an air bag and are in a nice metal object, the forces that act upon your body in any sort of trauma needs all the help it can get.

I wear it whenever I am riding, but I take it off ASAP when I am not on the seat, even if its just to dismount and walk with the bike for a minute :x

Never wore a helmet, bought a full face for downhill trails and smashed it into a tree the next day. Certainly don't regret buying it now!

Indeed, I'd rather have the brute force of the impact taken by my helmet than my skull. People may think that it won't have any effect but it does, as soon as you hit the ground you'll lose lots of energy, and it's better channeled into your helmet than your head.
