Low mileage diesel Passat, anyone?

I saw a 4 year old 7 series with 200k go for not much more than this a few days ago at auction.

What's the point of this?
 
That looks rather nice. I don't like the sheer dashboard but the condition at least in the pics looks great for the milage. Probably a badi idea, but a lot of car for 10k I would imagine?
 
Not that surprising given the build quality of the thing in the first place,somewhat over-engineered! :D

I regularly drive 300k mile + trucks that have hardly the pampered life of a Phaeton yet cover up the mileometer & tachograph and you really would not know it from both behind the wheel in terms of feel nor by general apperance - Modern production techniques & improvements in general vehicle reliability is making mileage almost irrelevent.


That Phaeton is a bargain.

I think cars should also have an engine hours log like aircraft/boats. That would give a much better indication of wear and tear. In 8 hours cruising up to Edinburgh you would rack up around 430 miles from where I live. In 8 hours knocking around town probably no more than 100.
 
LOL, not only does it have Dame Shirley Bassey's arseprint in it, I just personally dont think cars are designed to go on this long without SOMETHING major failing. And that something will be expensive! I don't have that '100k fear' that loads of people seem to have, but i certainly do when it nears 250k!
 
my golf is on 220k now. engine hasnt been opened once. one clutch change, few cambelt changes.

the rest of it has been standard maintenance

Good idea, it should give a much better indication. Plugged into this should also be services and component changes.
 
I'd love a Phaeton...BUT...I wish they would get rid of the hideous wood trim and instead offer either carbon fibre or brushed aluminium instead - it's a lovely car, very powerful, very comfortable, very cheap second hand :)

Its designed to compete in the luxury class segment, against S-Class', 7-Series' et all. Carbon fibre or ally trim would look rather out of place in this sector.

With respect, surely that's debatable? It should be an option IMHO, even if the wood were to remain as standard. I really don't like it, for me, it ruins what is otherwise a really nice car.
 
Servicing on these is going to be grim.
When I was at my local VW dealer they had a V10 TDI in to find the source of an oil leak.
This was an engine-out job. Fun.

I would assume that this has been thought of. I cannot imagine it being a popular option at all. Traditionally cars with sporting pretensions within this class have not been popular :)

Do you think you are likely to ever be in the market for the purchase of a new car within the luxury segment?

People who want carbon fibre interior trim dont buy new VW Pheatons. They might like the idea of a Pheaton, but they wont buy one. They'll buy something else. The Pheaton is the opposite end of the Motoring spectrum to sportyness.
