Macbook Pro - buy now, or wait?

I don't travel enough for the size/weight to bother me. But watching a film on 13" would :)

Can you still get the previous 15" model and has it dropped down a lot in price?

I'm stil totally gutted about the price's :(

As I would only be using it for web browsing/e-mail/ocuk/pr0n/youtube the spec of the 13.3" I guess would be fine, but 13.3" is just that bit too small as I do travel and watching a film on it would be rubbish. 15" is just perfect but for 1500 I don't think so!

i'm the same. have been waiting for the updates for ages.
i would have liked to see the i3 in the 13" at least

i'll probably end up going for the base 13" unless i convince myself an extra half a grand! is worth it. unbelieveable, hmmmm

They were never going to include USB 3 in this update imo, it would have meant tacking on a NEC/Fujitsu chip to the mobo. I think that until Intel make an intergrated chip with USB 3, there is no chance of Apple adopting the standard in laptops at all, there might be a slim chance in the desktop range.

I don't even think that Intel plan to include USB 3 in the new Sandy Bridge architecture, only USB 2. They obviously have got it in for USB 3.0 and/or are planning to unleash lightpeak at somepoint to compete.

Lightpeak has great potential and if it was to be adopted by apple at an early stage it would push the platform on leaps and bounds, but i really think they should adopt USB 3.0 too. USB 3.0 will gain a lot more market penetration over the next 6-12 months and having it backwards compatable with XX million devices out there is a great booster for it's adoption.

I'm personally going to wait until LP or USB 3.0 is added to the 15" MBP's before I decide to get a new one (currently using a white macbook).

I think my dream MBP would have USB 3/Lightpeak, an SSD as standard (with TRIM support), a 15" OLED screen (even though they dont really come in 15" yet), a Quad core CPU and 6GB RAM. But I dont think that kind of machine is going to exist for a while yet :P.

I would have liked USB 3, but overall I am pretty happy with the update. The processor only has two physical cores, but it does have four logical cores which for most purposes gives the same effect. On the ram front 4gb is more than enough for anything I am going to us. CS4 Flash professional is about the only program I intend to use that consumes ram, and 4gb should be more than enough. It is only a matter of time before SSD's replace hard disks completely in all but mass storage solutions. But the current prices are just too much for me to justify adding one.

Lightpeak does look amazing, but it seems too good to be true and because it is being purely developed by Intel rather than being an IEEE standard, I can't see it gaining mass adoption unless, as you said, a company like Apple/HP/Sony forces the standard on iPods, Macbooks, TV's etc.

I treated myself to a new bog standard MB.
I couldn't justify the extra for the pro for what I use it for.

Ordered at 2pm yesterday, arrived 10am this morning :D
Luvly jubbly!

Most probably as they want customers to buy Bluray media via iTunes.

While I've always been reasonably unfussed by that up to now it's becoming a bit of a joke now. I know they'd prefer we all got HD content via itunes (and actually I'd prefer to myself) but the inability to read HD media without an expensive external drive is a bit annoying now...

I don't understand who will watch a Blu Ray on a laptop?

Really not arsed about it myself.
They have video output you know. Plus, someone might only own a blu-ray disc because they bought it primarily for their home theatre.

That said, I'm not fussed either. Knowing Apple, it would probably be a £500 extra charge ;)

Surely, if you're interested in Blu Ray you have either a PS3 or a dedicated Blu Ray player, or both.

Jobs did say it was a "World of hurt" at the moment though.

It's more the capacity of the BR drive that would appeal to me, 25/50gb for backups on removable media would be most handy.

That would probably be the only reason for me to have one also. Copying huge tiffs to a DVD soon fills it up. Only bad thing is sending clients a Blu Ray disc and expecting them to be able to read it.

The problem with iTunes video material is that the HD bitrate is only 4Mbps, compared with 25Mbps for most Blu-Ray material. It's not worth the premium over the SD iTunes content.

(Plus, it's annoying that you can't redownload purchases normally ala Steam)

After finding out about the update i was extremely excited, finally time for an upgrade i thought.

However on closer inspection there not bloody quad core!

Come'on apple!

The quad core parts :
1) Use 30% more power
2) Are lower clocked
3) Expensive

I'd say they're for specialist applications only that can utilise the multiple cores. 95% of the MBP users out there will get a better overall experience with the faster clocked dual core chips.

i took the plunge and ordered a new one, I7 15" with a few upgrades, problem is that estimated deliveries are now end of April :(, to think it was the 22nd last night

are you all ordering on the appleuk site?

would you not rather go instore and pick it up just in case

oh and what about this apple care? if something goes wrong are they going to charge a bomb and are MBP likely to go down?
edit, just looked at the price £279, i'll take my chances i think

Glossy or matt screen - which is best ? I can't get to apple store till the weekend.

Seriously considering 17" I7 machine to replace all my current computer systems .

4 or 8GB ? is 8G really worth it just now - do you think it would be better to wait until prices come down and stick 8GB in in a years time or so?

And should I get 500 7200 or 500 5400?

The prices of the refubred macs don't actually seem that great a deal to be honest as far as I can see ? best seems to be a 2.8 C2D 4G/ 500/ for about 3-400 cheapr than a new spec faster model?

I went for the 7200 rpm drive with the High Res glossy, 4GB RAM

I did call a store and at present they only have the standard models, so any configured models have to be ordered through the web/phone. Store I called was Regent St.

I ordered through HE (over the phone), so that comes with 3 year parts and labour as standard. The only thing the applecare applies to on that is for technical phone support.

Guy I spoke to was awesome so if anyone wants his details give me a shout
