If im in the wrong section for this post then appols, please direct me in the right place. Im having a problem with my pc and a mate of mine suggested I ask on this forum for a possible answer.

I have a dell dimesion 1100 currently running win7. My problem is that id really like to hop back over to XP. Easier said than done since this particular dell pc wont let me boot from a cd and I stupidly deleted the xp setup partition :)

I have tried umteen guides for doing the set up via usb stick, but since im not very technically minded i have failed each time.

Does anyone have a bullet proof way of doing this conversion to XP using a usb stick or know of any guides on the net?

Thanks.

Vin.

The USB stick method is a pain in the rear for XP. I suspect it would be easier to figure out why you cannot boot from the CD drive.

If you're not very technically minded, perhaps you could find someone who could show you how to change the boot order in your BIOS settings. This is basically a list of devices that get checked as a source to boot from. If the CD drive is lower down in the pecking order than any other bootable media this is why you are not getting prompted to boot from the XP CD.

thanks for your reply.. well i know all about how to change the boot order in the bios.. maybe I have undereastimated myself in being not technically minded, maybe not that technically minded :)

the bios version that my dell has does not seem to support booting from cd.. i have searched the net for bios updates and the only release i can find is the original one installed on this pc. if reinstalling win7 would be easier then id defo do that. this pc really needs a fresh instal, rather than the update i did in the winxp enviorment via cd.

How was Win 7 put on the PC, as it seems an older model so I assume it originally had XP on it?

Also, with Dell PCs, when you get to the Dell boot screen , pressing F12 should give you a list of bootable devices. You could try that.

i installed w7 thru xp using the cd.. done the F12 thing too, i do get the option to boot from cd there, but when the option is selected it jumps straight over to the hdd.
