Hi all, ok so I am very fond of anything Porsche make, however I dont know a lot about them. There seem to be so many different models that I get confused and would like to expand my knowledge a little :p
If someone could post an idiots guide on the different models etc I would be eternally greatful.

Basically.

You have your Boxster and 911 nowadays.

911 range is:

Carrera
Carrera S
Carrera 4
Carrera 4 S
Turbo
Turbo S
GT3
GT3 RS
GT2
GT2 RS.

I think :p No doubt i've missed something or some of those models aren't in the lineup anymore.

Then you have your Cayenne which is just crap.

and all the historic ones ( a few of which are ;550 Spyder infamous for James Dean's crash, 959 late 80's supreme rally car - and my personal favourite, and the 944 Turbo)

Never really liked the boxters much I have to admit - just something always feels a little "wrong" to me.

That badge/emblem just gives me hte shivers every time I see it

:/ so I gather so far that I am not the only one that goes wtfomg!! at the amount of models they manufacture :)

Well no, not really. They have a product line consisting of only 5 cars - the Boxster, Cayman, 911, Cayenne and Panamera.

Can't really see the confusion, it is a smaller range than most manufacturers.

Boxster

Convertible in 2.9 or 3.4 - superb car - slagged off by the stupid

Cayman

2 seat coupe based on Boxster but considered a slightly higher model, again 2.9 or 3.4, both engines slightly more powerful that Boxster versions

911 the iconic Porsche , coupe, convertible or targa

3.6 Carrera in 2 or 4 wheel drive

3.8 Carrera S as above but quicker

Turbo and Turbo S - true supercars

GT3 , lightweight focused semi track car

Sport Classic - retro styling with stupid price

Panamera

4 door sports coupe - some think ugly but has grown on me , superb car whatever you think of looks

Cayenne

semo off roader , shares a lot with VW Tourag - not Porsche's best moment but new model seems better

and they make it in a diesel and a hybrid, oh my lord

That's all I can bothered to add. Go to the Porsche website, plenty of history on there I think you'll find.

Again, not really. There are more variants of Golf in the current range than there are variants of 911 in the current range?

We're not talking about VW though. Of all the Porsche models of note, a lot of them are 911s, and also the name changes from previous ranges confuse, such as 964, 993, 996, 997 etc, sounding like they're different models, but they're more like 911 mk2 like your golf example. I can see how they're confused.
