I'm thinking about picking up a Q9550 for £160 that is E0 stepping, I spoke to the person that is selling and he said that one of the cores can only be read @ 41c or above, he said this is quite common with these cpu's is that true? and if so is it an issue?

Also do you think I will see much of a performance jump from my Conroe E6300 @ 3.2 to the Q9550 clocked hopefully @ around 3.5?

My resolution is 1920x1200, and I want to see improvements in the following games,

Crysis/Warhead
GTA IV

He also sent me this pic,

As you can see the vid for the chip is 1.1375v and he has it set @ 1.192v to get 3.4ghz, does that seem reasonable?

Yes CPU does sound reasonable however I think £140 is more of a fair price, personally I went from a dualcore to a quad in gta the difference was impressive, however this will depend on your gpu aswell.

No way mate seen them go for £100-£110, the highest I seen them go in mm is £125 don't pay more than £125 for one absolute max.
The q6600's have taken a bit of a dip lately too seen them going for £65-£75 lately probably better off getting a q6600 than pay silly money for a q9550.

People asking £140 + for a q9550 are just trying it on and sometimes it works and still sells.

It's like these people still trying to ask £100 for a q6600 lol when they sell all the time for £65-£75.
Chip is worth no more than £125 one sold recently a good clocking E0 stepping for £120 inc.

Think of it this way say you can bag a q6600 for £65-£75 is the q9550 even at 3.8 ghz more than double the performance of a q6600@ 3.4 ghz + the answer is nowhere near therefore it's not worth double the price.

The sticking temp sensors is quiet common - i've got a Q9650 that has 3 stuck sensors below 39 - once it loads up it's fine but it's not a problem tbh.

C64 - If you see a decent one for £100-£120 then send me a link via my trust please.

Cheers!

do a search in the for sale in the mm can clearly see they go for that kind of price and slightly cheaper
you just have to get in sharpish as they tend to get snapped up here's an example from january
Socket 775 Q9550

Lapped by previous owner, pics on request.

Had it up to 3.75ghz prime stable on Swiftech cheapo watercooling. Previous owner was running it at 3.85ghz prime stable iirc.

Chip only - will come well protected and sent RMSD.

Price £100.
You just have to wait for a sensible price and not rush in on an overpriced one, like some guys asking £155 which is ambitious to say the least.

Agree with C64, £160.00 is way too much for a q9550, about 6 months ago i sold a 1.200 vid q9550 for £120.00, oem chip that id clocked to 3.8ghz on 1.216 vcore, had stuck sensors on it as well at load, 2 cores sat at 56-54, other 2 at 46-47.

Thanks for the advice guys, I passed on the Q9550, might keep my eye out for a Q6600 then but a little worried about the temps as my rooms ambient is 27c in the summer which was the main reason I was going for the Q9550 as they tend to run a bit cooler, although if I can get Q6600 pretty cheap I guess it'll be worth the punt just to try it out.

Agree with this and that is a good clocker...

I have a Q9550 (E0) and all the temps sensors are working, also had a C1 and they all worked as well...

The Q6600 (G0) is another good option for you to consider.

I went from a Q6600 to a Q9550 and found that apart from some additional multimedia extensions it also overclocked much better.

I paid £145 for mine.

Re the temp sensors sticking - no major probs, common issue

I paid £125 for my new E0 stepping Q9550 recently and the core temps seem normal to me.

I have hit 4ghz easily with a H50 with nice temps and probably could go quite abit further if I wanted.

I went from an E8400 at 3.6ghz to a Q9450 at 3.3Ghz and whilst most games seem the same in terms of fps everything else seems a lot smooth and video conversions much quicker.

I paid £130 for my Q9450 and sold my E8400 for £75 on ebay so not too much money for the upgrade!

I paid £80 for a q9550 E0 through brotherly love, also he got it from work for free, sold my Q6600 G0 for £75, I have noticed a really big change between the two, but that was with a new motherboard, Q9550 seems to love clocking high without many volts.

Like others are said £160 is too high, £110 - 130 seems pretty decent. Only problem is they are quite popular chips and there are not many of them about since getting to the top end of 775, which probably warrants people pushing their luck a bit. :p

Went from a [email protected] to a [email protected] and would definately recommend it, noticed a large boost in games that make use of all the cores like GTA4, BFBC2 etc.

These may go for less in the MM on here but they have been selling for around £150 on ebay for months now, as iNPUt said these are popular chips and people are willing to pay that kind of money so you can't really blame people for charging that price.

Paid £140 for mine on the bay just over a month ago and am very happy with it, meant I could upgrade without having to buy a new mb/ram etc. Might be worth holding out for a better price or going for a Q6600 as others have suggested.

Wouldn't pay more than £125 for it either, unless its proven to do 4+gig on low voltage - then I might pay £160 - I bought one new for £160 not that long ago.

Couple of things to note - yes stuck sensors isn't uncommon (mine don't register below 35C on 2 cores), the stock heatsink on most of the recent batches is RUBBISH so you deffinitly want to be using aftermarket cooling - coolermaster V8 works well with mine. Other than that they are great, often underrated CPUs get them up around 4gig and everything flies.

I've just agreed to a Q9550 from someone on here @ £130,

With two stuck sensors read above 37c.

That looks ok doesn't it ?

I'll probably sell my E6300 for around £30 so it will end up being a £100 upgrade which doesn't seem too bad.

I'm not looking forward to having to take my whole system apart though, dam back plates for cpu coolers are a pain in the ass seriously.
