New motorised sofa

My Dad has the estate version of this - otherwise exactly the same.

The only complaint I would have with it is the poor turning circle. Otherwise, the engine will just eat through miles. Town traffic is much heavier on the fuel, but you can expect long term combined average of low 40s.

Like most diesels, it really doesn't like the extreme cold. Once warmed up though the engine is really nice.

Very nice example. After despising much of the boxy Volvoness in my school years, I came around to liking the S60. My dad's friend had a later model D5 and a very heavy right foot. With 4 adults in the car on the way to the rugby, it gave good comfort and great pulling power.

I have the same car, but an 02. You will not be disappointed. I see 55-60mpg average on a long run, 48 around town. It's incredible on fuel for a car it's size.

I had a manual one as a demo at work for a few days, nice car but i got nowhere near that sort of economy and i was not pushing it. Felt damn quick compared to my 2.0 mondeo and tdi 130 passats i was driving at the time though.

Looks great. I like the angled dash. :)

Can we have more interior shots please? BTW where in S London do you live? Except from the odd occasion I never get bad traffic jams. And I go through traffic hot spots all the time (when faced with traffic it's always fast moving!).

I live in Sutton area of south London, close to the A217. I travel to Epsom daily. I've actually just bought a bike and can make it the 5 miles to work faster on my bike than I can in a car because of the traffic.

Somehow the colour just doesn't come across that well in photos. Looks better in real life.

BTW, I was a little confused by a cable that was running into the glovebox. Had a play today, turns out that the owner had an Ipod adapter already fitted. So I can cycle between the indash 6 disk CD changer, or my 30GB Ipod. Absolutely spot on!

Seriously, what?

48mpg town?

If you really were acheiving 48mpg around town, your car would be so economical that it would acheive considerably more than 55mpg on a long run.

Otherwise I suspect your idea of town usage is a bit different to most peoples - town is cold starts, short trips, and nothing like 48mpg from a Volvo S60.

You'll have a much bigger gap between long runs and town than 7mpg!

I was thinking that but wasn't sure about how the Volvo engine should perform.

My 1.9 Afla manages 42 - 44 on my weekly commute, around town it'd be high 30's

Maybe I should look at a Volvo next!

My "town usage" may be differant to yours i rarely drive for less than half an hour and rarely get stuck. These are always pretty personal numbers though aren't they?

I usually work off 45mpg towing, 48 round town and 55 motorway but thats how i drive around here. I have been as high as 60mpg over 200 miles!

At the opposite end of the scale i towed a double boat trailer (Piggy-back) last weekend while very heavily loaded for 400 miles and averaged 30mpg.

7mpg difference does seem a bit low (or the original figure is a bit high)

As an example the Mini gets 23mpg around town and that's an average speed of 16mph in traffic, with a daily cold start on a morning, and a cold start on an evening to go home after work.

On a motorway run at 80ish average it returns 37mpg.

The generally accepted definition of 'around town' is local running about in a start-stop city environment.

Most peoples idea of 'town driving' doesn't tend to encompass a 30 minute drive with no traffic!

'Around town' I was getting 33mpg from a 118d. If I managed to find a non-stop road through town and drive along it for 30 minutes like you do then sure, it would do 50mpg, but thats not really town driving, is it?

Having owned our S60 for nearly 2 months, I thought it would be worth giving a quick update on how it's going.

Lets get the bad bits out of the way:
- The turning circle really is as rubbish as people say. According to a US website, it's only 1m worse than an E46, certainly seems to be worse. It's not the end of the world, but does require more planning in tight areas.
- The fuel consumption isn't that brilliant, i.e. averaging around the mid to high 30s. Being fair, we spend most of our time in traffic jams, and our 330i would have been around 20mpg, so it's still a good 50-75% better. On a long run, we average in the 40s.
- Being a diesel, sounds like a world war 1 biplane when it's just been started on a cold day.
- We had the most annoying noise coming from the rear suspension. I thought we were going to have to replace the shocks and bushes. In the end I tracked it down to a combination of the head-restraint in my son's baby seat (solved with some bubble wrap) and my box of bits (e.g. first aid kit, fire extinguisher) knocking against the rear seat. It's nice when a potentially nasty fix turns out to be free for a change.
- Volvo main dealer service somehow manages to make BMW look cheap. A BMW big service for our 330i was £320, Volvo want £560. Lets just say that ours will only ever be seeing independant specialists.

In short, no real horror stories.

And the good bits:
- The best seats I've come across in a car (unless you need bucket seats for track work). Just amazingly comfortable. I recently sat in a new XF, and I'm sure that the Volvo seats are better.
- When it's warmed up and moving, it's VERY quiet. Much quieter than our 330i was. Even at standstill, it's much smoother than most diesels I've been in. The exception to this is when you floor it, when it almost sounds like a quieter version of an old Audi Quattro, which I guess makes sense as they both have 5 cylinder engines.
- Everything about the way the car drives is "waft". Light and easy controls, mid-range torque where you need it, amazingly smooth auto gear changes, nice ride.
- Whilst it's setup for comfort, it's not completely hopeless when shown a corner. The steering is progressive (if lacking in feedback) and the handling is fine. Linked to 225 tyres all round, and it's got more than adequate levels of grip. Doesn't tramline at all. Don't get me wrong, it is NOT a sports car, and doesn't make even the slightest attempt to be, but it won't wallow around like a supertanker in a swell when shown a corner and certainly doesn't leave you wondering what the wheels are upto.
- Bigger boot (by 30%), more width for rear seat passengers and a fold down rear seat, which allowed us to get a rolled up king sized memory foam mattress in it this morning.
- Quality interior. IMO the S60 is at least on par with our 330i, and feels very very solid. Makes something like a mk3 Mondeo look like it was made by Zanussi, i.e. like an appliance. I have to say that the way the doors close and everthing fits so well, I expected it to weigh lots. Kerb weight is around 1480kg, which is about 40kg lighter than our 330i was, lighter than a 320D, and a wopping 120kg lighter than say a Rover 75 CDTi, which I guess would have been a competitor when new.
- Brilliant stereo, well at least once you've realised that DP2 is a waste of time and disabled it. I wouldn't put it on par with a genuine dedicated home stereo system, but it's not a million miles adrift.
- Very effective dual zone climate control. In comparison the E46s seemed like it was broken. Even has vents in the B pillars for rear seat passengers.
- Oodles of toys, e.g. dipping rear view mirror, parking sensors, Ipod adapter, trip computer, cruise control, memory drivers seat etc etc.

In short, it's a lovely place to be unless the car is stone cold. Miles better than our 330i was for our needs.
Possibly more important is how it makes you feel. When I get our of it, I'm far less stressed than I was whilst driving our 330i, which rather surprised me, as most of our local journeys really aren't fun.
For anyone who's had enough of rock hard suspensions and stress, it's a brilliant option.

Nice one Mr _S..... I had a manual 2006 S60 D Sport for 3 months as company car/severance offer.... Drove back and forth to Slovakia in it.... I really liked it, I would say about the most solid and best built cars I've driven... When I came to buy a car I struggled to match it.... For me BMW were not a match.... End up with an A4 Avant.
I found once you got use to it you could tool it around corners quite nicely for big'un... and I actually loved the 5 pot growl when you booted it.... reminded me why I wanted the RS Focus with the 5 pot Volvo engine...LOL.
For a diesel sadly the economy is poor, the Audi was way better, and quicker.

Have to say it complete changed my view and misconception of Volvo.... I'd look again at them...when I want something practical ;)
