I can't speak for the new MBP's but I've got a 2 year old MacBook and it's silent. Completely silent, you can't hear a thing, though when you boot up something that uses flash the fans do come on and they are fairly loud, it sounds like you're ripping tracks from a CD. It's something to do with Apple being iffy on flash content iirc but anything inbetween flash and it's whisper quiet.
