So, what was it for you?

The foggy days of standing a milk bottle on your console, with graphics that would make alex the kidd look impressive?

Or the 8 bit days, where we got our first taste of Mario, Sonic and co?

16 bit? Where Street Fighter 2 was unleashed, the whole world screamed "MORTAL KOMBAT!" And other major series got their start?

The days of 32 bit and 64 bit? Where Panzer Dragon Saga was released and blew everyone away, where MGS got its rebirth, or when the world marveled at a 3d mario?

Or instead, are you a fan of the later gen of consoles? the PS2 onward?

I was thinking about this carefully over the last few days, I come to a decision, but then realize I've forgotten tons of games on a different gen of consoles! :p

I'd say so far though the PS2 gen is slightly behind the PS3 gen (obviously these include the xboxs, the wiis, cubes and so on). I've got to say, out of current, 32 bit and 16 they're about even. I literally cannot decide :(

Whenever the Playstation came out.

A few games off the top of my head that were awesome:
Crash Bandicoot
Gran Turismo
Silent Hill
Resident Evil
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy
Tomb Raider

The first Playstation had so many must buy exclusives. Brother had an N64 where I could play Zelda and Goldeneye.

The PS2 gen of consoles were also excellent. I had all 3 consoles:).

I feel that the current gen of consoles has gone downhill. Many people have moved from PC gaming to the 360, the PS3 has a pathetic amount of exclusives when you compare to what Sont used to have and the Wii just does not appeal to me.

May be it is because I am no longer a child, may be it is because I don't have time for 20-30 hours a week gaming anymore, but I just cannot bring myself to pay full price for a game.
Perhaps this is because my PSX, PS2 and Xbox were all modded, I don't know.

The last one I bought was Bad Company 2 Limited Edition on PC for 24.99.

I really want FF13 on PS3, but I am certainly not paying full whack for it. I will wait.

Couldn't decide!

I'll always remember getting a SNES and the countless hours put into Mario games, not a worry in the world back then, just get home, mario time!

But the Playstation era brung along Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, MGS, Silent Hill which got me into gaming properly. Absolutely loved the first taste of RE or sneaking around on MGS.

I've definitely put the most hours into the most recent generation though. Was a 360 guy until I managed to find some PS3 games I liked and now I'm on that a 3-4 times a week. It'll never be like it was when you were at school, home early and all weekend playing Mario with your mates.

Would have to be the 16 bit for me.

SNES with

Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Zelda
Super Contra
F-Zero
Streetfighter II
Pilot Wings

I have very fond memories of my Spectrum days though. Chaos is one of my all time favorites, if i could get the thing to load. Its probably why i'm so forgiving with bugs in games these days.

For me it has to be the 16-Bit generation.

I had both Megadrive and SNES and loved every minute of them.

Megadrive:
Sonic series
Madden series
Buck Rogers
Desert / Jungle / Urban Strike
Golden Axe
Ghouls & Ghosts
PGA Tour
Shinobi series
Shadow Run

SNES:
Street Fighter series
Wing Commander
Mario All Stars & World
F-Zero
Pilotwings
Mario Kart
Final Fantasy III
Zelda

Now that's an awesome gaming generation!

The perception of computer games as a child is so much more exciting and intense than when you're older that this favours greatly in what I consider to be the best generation. Playing Resident Evil 2 at about 11 was easily my most memoriable gaming experience (probably because it scarred me for life lul). Also MGS, GT and Syphon Filter were both unbelieveable at that age. So I'm going with 32-bit, Playstation 1. This followed closely by the 64-bit N64 era though with Goldeneye!! Ah no SNES/Megadrive I loved as well, and PS2.

I think either the Super Nintendo or the N64. I remember being ridiculously excited about the N64. Mario 64, GoldenEye, Mario Kart and Zelda were absolutely astounding.

I remember playing the SNES way too much - waking up early on school mornings so I could play my new game for an hour before school. :D

The PS2/Gamecube/Dreamcast generation wasn't particularly exciting since it was more of the same again... this generation we've actually had a major leap forward in the Xbox 360 and PS3 and I've enjoyed a lot more games in this generation than the immediate last.

Difficult one, I have enjoyed each generation for their own merits.8 bit and16 bit was when I first started gaming and they gave some great games with great gameplay 32 bit gave games with (then) amazing graphics, thus generation has taken graphics further but for me this generation has been about amazing multiplayer in games, that element has been so well done and giving me gaming moments on par with the 16 bit days.

The PS1, I had been gaming since my dad bought me CPC 464 way back when, I've owned almost all the main consoles (bar the N64) but none of them have given me as much gaming pleasure as the PS1.

Top games for me were:

Resident Evil 1& 2
Gran Turismo
Tomb Raider 1 & 2
X-Com
Metal Gear Solid.
Colin Mcrae Rally
G-Police
Tekken
Doom.
Demolition Derby 2

And many, many more.

I'm gonna have to say the ps1 gen, The sheer amount of must have games was emense... The first time you came against a bear with Laura, The first time you have a zombie after you in the corridor, The first time you see how many cars there really are for sale and then who can forget the total immersion of Cloud and friends world!!

Close 2nd for me being Amiga gen

16bit for me as well.I had a SNES and my mate had a megadrive.
So many great games on both of those systems.Including my no.1 game of all time - super mario world.

Loved the Megadrive and SNES era, however i'd have to say this gen has probably given me the most enjoyment and gameplay of all.

After some thought, I've decided on the 128bit era.

Dreamcast
PlayStation 2
Xbox
Nintendo GameCube

It's jus not possible to say anything else for me, as much as I loved PS1 in the 32bit era. The 128bit era just opened the gates to so many awesome games over so many platforms.

God of war
Resident evil remakes and 4
MGS1remake, 2 and 3
Halo
Shenmue
Beyond good and evil
Super Mario sunshine
POP sands of time
Toy Commander
Crazy Taxi
Jet Set Radio
Final Fantasy 10, 12
shinmegamitensei
Ninja Gaiden
Silent Hill sequels
Okami
Tekken sequels
Fable
Knights of the old republic
Soul reaver
power stone
Phantasy star online
Grandia
pikmin
Smash bros melee
Space channel 5
Skies of arcadia
ChuChu Rocket
marvel vs Capcom 2
Timesplitters
Soul Calibur sequels
Ico and shadow of collosus
Devil May Cry
Kingdom Hearts
Burnout
GTA 3, Vicecity and San andreas
rogue squadron
Viewtiful Joe
Metroid prime
Beyond good and evil
Super Mario sunshine
POP sands of time
pikmin
Smash bros melee

And I'm sure i've missed some too :D Add to that the fact the consoles such as PS2 and Xbox were able to play DVDs, I dont think there's much competition in my eyes.

For me my favourite generation was the N64 generation. I had more fun on the one console than I have had on any other!

Goldeneye, PD, Zelda, WWF No Mercy, F Zero X and more games that I just cannot remember! I loved them all!

I never had a PS1 till really late into the life cycle so I had played FF VII on PC first, but I can imagine it would have been a much closer race between the 2 in my eyes if I had played it on PS1 first

N64 is the best really, never has there been a console where i didnt feel bad at paying £50 a game! Loved the megadrive and dreamcast too but there wasnt the polished feeling compared to the very best of the N64 games.

Current gen seem to get away with half finishing games and releasing patches every few months to sort out lazy development (and tack on content with "achievements" i much preferred the old random challenges you and your mates could make up for games or the nearly impossible ones from the old magazines where you cold send in your taped laps from mario kart...)
