GTA 4 Gay Tony Stutter

if res 5 is anything to go by then having it off does lower image iq slightly.if you look closely you might see that edges are a bit fuzzy even when you use AA.

advanced can also sometimes lower iq but ive never took the time to study it so as a rule of thumb standard is the best option 24/7 UNLESS you run into problems like GTAIV.

still sucks tho doubtful it will be patched either

100 is useless? hum....... okay. prefer it to be at maximum in case there are little details missing.

i'll try 40 view distance and everything else on very high with cat AI off.......

edit:

tested with 80 view distance, all high with Cat AI off, gameplay is smooth and playable.
with Cat AI, can only play at medium, so definite improvement.

seems like ATI cards don't like the memory value to go into red (exceed vRAM). on my gtx260 and 8800GTX, i could put everything up on to very high without much shuttering, just general slow-down.

shame gtx400 is such a letdown....... would have preferred nVidia

Drive to the bottom of a long straight road in-game (Times square is good.) and bring up the settings menu. You should see the menu overlaying the game now, so move the view distance slider all the way to the left and move it back again..... You should see stuff disappear and re-appear in real time, this is the effect view distance has. Find the level where stuff stops popping in and add maybe 5 or so... You should find its about 35-40.

Having VRam in the red will cause stuttering as you will have texture swapping between ram and Vram which is not good in any circumstance so try to avoid that.

never had that problem with nVidia cards though. both 8800GTX and GTX260 were very happy with more than 1GB of vRAM usage (according to the game) doesn't have the elastic shuttering feel on this 5870.

I only get that with V High shadows to be fair..... They make the game run like crap and don't they don't look any different to high from what I can tell.

yes, very high shadow is a real performance killer for these ATI cards. can't run even it with 0 view distance.

still, setting high for everything, but let view distance wonder to high end, whenever the vRAM meter goes into red, there's shuttering. unacceptable if you ask me, nVidia never had this problem.

Ive played a lot of GTA IV PC over the past couple of years, and ive always had stuttering with ATI cards, whereas Nvidia cards, from the 8800 GTS 512 up to the GTX 280, never had a problem. Make what you will of that :/

Agree with you two. Stutters with my Crossfire 5870's but not with a GTX295 (even with its lower RAM) and probably wont when i get a 480.
Things like this with ATI is whats making me go back to NV. I mean, even now they have only just fixed the long loading times and flickering with BFBC, and the issues with the second display flickering when OC-ing.... then theres the 2D performance issues and more, most of which have been around since the 5xxx release... it certainly is unacceptable.

I have stuttering with a 480 with the new DLC. I had no stuttering with a 280 but that was pre patch 6. My son with a 9800GTX now has stuttering with vanilla GTA IV with the latest patch where he had no stuttering before.

There are comments all over the place suggesting that the DLC patch has caused FPS issues.

indeed the new 1.0.1.0 patch seems to be the problem.

i just re-installed GTA4 with 1.0.0.4 patch, and i can now play everything max (v high shadow, 100 all sliders over 1500MB of vRAM usage) without any shuttering and higher framerate than GTX260. which is all good.

seems like the "new shadow algorithm" is to blame. Rockstar can't program for ****.

To be fair it may be some driver issue. The game devs often work with a different driver (newer beta) to the current, either way it is pretty unplayable for most people with the new patch. I'm sure something will appear it the next few days to correct the problem.

There's a guy on this board complaining about Z-fighting and another saying the 480 stutters in GTA IV so good luck with that.

I guess you haven't heard what happens when you connect a second monitor to a 480 either, so good luck with that too.

BFBC 2 takes 45 seconds to load on a 480 in DX11 apparently compared to <10 currently on a 5870.... So....Uhm..... Good luck with with that as well....

After 15 years messing about with PC's I can safely say the grass is never greener on the other side.....

Just dropping the shadows down from high to medium with everything else at max besides draw distance (around 45 i think) sorted the stuttering I was getting.

I'm considering buying a new ATI card such as a 5770, but the reports of stuttering in GTA IV are putting me off, because that is one of the main games I'd be upgrading for. Performance on my 9600GT is not brilliant but it doesn't stutter.

if you play with old patch (namely 1.0.0.4) the performance is excellent.

it's just the new patch make every graphics card on the market shutter

Not for me. 5870 here and no issues. The stutter I had was resolved by dropping the shadows down to medium and turning night shadow off.

let me rephrase:

it's just the new patch make every graphics card on the market shutter when try to run with very high shadow setting.
