80GB vs 160GB Intel SSD

I really want one of the Intel SSD's, thing is I cant decide over the 80GB or 160GB, are there any real performance differences with the differences in size.

I can manage on an 80GB but I could also stretch the cash to afford a 160GB if the performance is that much better.

I will use the drive for, Windows, Apps, Games. So about 50-60GB will be used id expect.
 
I'd go for the 160 as 80 (74GB) is pretty restrictive for a desktop and SSD's generally perform better and will last longer if they have free space. I made the mistake of buying the 80 and now I have to install stuff to a mechanical storage drive :o
 
Tbh I dont install much on my PC, I like to keep it pretty clean. Anybody know the rough size for installed Win 7 Ultimate x64, Office,
 
Probably better off going for the 160, it's a little bit quicker + you have the bonus of extra space for games + what have you. Even if you don't use it, the ssd will make good use of it.

The only reason I went for the 80 instead of the 160 is that all I have on it is the os and commonly used apps. Games (800 gigs of them), lesser used apps & data go on my hard drive array.

Also, don't make the mistake of getting an 80, realising you need more space and getting another. You loose trim if you do, which is what keeps them nice and fast.
 
I'm coping ok on an 80GB, there's enough space for Win7, Apps, 5-6 games.
The 160GB would be a bit more convenient as I wouldn't have to manage my space as much when putting a new game on, but it's a lot of extra money just to save myself a couple minutes cut and pasting a directory.

Either spend the money on moving your laptop or another PC you use frequently to SSD, or save it and put it towards upgrading to a larger SSD in a year or two.

If you go RAID, don't worry about losing TRIM, the speed boost in RAID0 more than makes up for it (an untrimmed x25-m only drops around 10% performance, so the array would still be 80% faster than a single drive)

i bought a 80gb last week already thinking about selling it as its just not big enough...should have got the 160gb as thats ample space for everything you need....might get another one and do raid 0 though .
 
Go with the 160GB as its a bit quicker and unless you have a very limited range of software the 80GB (~74 GB as the OS sees it) will fill up real quick.
 
yeah why is that ....74gb when advertised at 80gb....usually 6 gig will not make a difference but with the price of the ssd its a lot of difference .
 
If you intend putting 50-60GBs on your SSD (which you will probably find is underestimated), I would go for the 160GB, as regards performance differance between 80/160GB, the read speeds are the same, but the write speed is about 12-15MB/s better for the 160GB...

I use the 80GB on both of my systems, but I only have the OS + programs installed on them, using a mechanical HDD for games...
 
having steam on a SSD is worth while, i only have two games installed L4D2 and BC2 i'm always one of the first to spawn and maps load so much quicker, you would think its all download time, but its not
 
I regret buying the 80gb and should've aimed at the 160gb instead. My fault for being a tight-wad. :(

I remember pulling that trick in 2004 when I purchased a 36gb Raptor for Battlefield Vietnam. From being a mid-spawner on a 40 player server, I was suddenly in the first three or four to appear. Very useful for getting cheap points at the start. :D
 
Still very much undecided, the price jump from the 80 - 160 is putting me right off.

Although I have the cash its a lot on money for only 160gig. Just chckin my c:\ drive now its at 52GB, with Win 7, Office, BC2, BF2, PR 0.9 7, & Company of Heroes.

The main theing is the longer lasting of the 160gig, how far are we away from the next gen versions?
