System shock 2

Hm. I've a file in my patches folder with the ss logo, called shkpatch.exe at 5352kb. Not sure what version, I imagine it's the latest, as I played the game long after it was originally released.

If this is it I can upload it?

Edit: Link vanishes!

Anyone have experience using the SHTUP mod? I think I must be doing something wrong. Atm on this particular drive it won't install the game from disc, says something about microsoft dx6.1 issue. I've had a good look on the forums but nothing yet has seemed to help.

Can you give a better description of where and how the error comes up?

The first problem I have encountered is a window pops up and says 'Windows NT detected.' ' This product cannot be installed due to a microsoft dx6.1 limitation. '

Yes I have. I've also had it running using only one cpu core. Apparently it isn't easy to get it working in Vista but it is possible. I copied the 'SHOCK' file from the CD to get it to run at all, then I couldn't get all the sound working, no save games...itlittle niggling problems continue from there onwards, lol.

It ran fine, as a demo, on W7 so I may try my other drive and see how I go.

hmm..i managed to get it working by installing on XP, then i copied the files over from there to Windows 7. All that didnt work were the movies..

That said, people seem to get different results on different hardware :(

Don't worry m8, I'll get it working eventually. Think it'll have to be W7 though. Been digging up info on the web all day, there are sooo many mods for this game! :) The texture ones look pretty good. Once I've got it stable I'll turn off the respawning enemies.

Thanks for your input. :)

To get it to install under Vista/etc, you need to run the installer with the "-lgntforce" parameter.

Don't bother with looking for patches/etc online, just use Kolya's SS2Tool:

http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,392.0.html

This will sort out all the patches/fixes you need, make the game mod-ready and optionally enable higher resolutions than normally supported.

After that you should install Rebirth Complemented Edition, SHTUP, one of the update midwife skins to make it less 'sexy' and more scary and optionally the tacticool weapon mods and the updated sound/video files. You can use the mod manager (also from the SBF site) to do most of the installation for you.

Any questions, please ask. I've just recently reinstalled the game myself so I remember the process quite well :)

edit: Just an FYI also. I'm on the ttlg.com forums as "Aekeron"... I would be slightly hesitant about posting for help over there if you've not already done so as they can be quite unwelcoming to newcomers.

edit2: Just noticed that you plan on turning off respawning enemies. Personally I wouldn't do so. It's nowhere near as bad as BioShock for that kind of thing and the respawning helps make it feel like you're never truly safe.

^^Thanks for that, appreciate it. :)

I wasn't sure if I have missed out on important steps but what I've done so far is :

tried to install from disc, can't and get error message. So I stumbled upon the same webby you mentioned and have downloaded SS2tool, mod manager - now I realise I don't need it, and a patch to bring the version from 1.15 - 2.33, I think. Unfortunately as the game is not 'installed' the patch can't be applied.

I think it might just be easier if I try it with windows 7 since all the tutorials I have seen / read so far seem to say something along the lines of 'Once you have installed the game......' - this it won't even do, lol.

I have posted in ttlg forums and have found the responses quick but apart from the stalker, half life 2 and doom mods I haven't done much of this sort of thing so it's still pretty new to me. :)

Make a shortcut to the installer/setup.exe file and then right click on it, click properties. In the target box add this to the very end (without the quotes) " -lgntforce". Remember to include the space before -lgntforce.

This will allow you to install it normally on Windows2000/Vista/Windows7/etc.

Don't turn off ALL the respawning enemies, just the daft spiders ones, think it was the recreation deck or something they were on, and just made it painful. You can get mods purely for them.

Thanks FrenchTart, the ' -lgntforce ' fix worked. Installed now. :) Will open it up later and before I apply any mods (SS2tool and SHTUP), I'll make a few basic fixes first. Many thanks!

:)

Added patch, now the sound has sorted itself out and of course, now no problem saving. :D

Use the SS2tool first as that will sort out tons of issues :)

Found the original CD the other day and brought back some great memories.

Will this work OK on Windows 7 64 Bit? If so I will give it a blast.
