will use old dragon full tower case and 22" lcd

any ideas on this spec or on the vaio.
dont matter tower or laptop it just needs to play games on and off line, as for the hard drive is it best to get the new one or is it ok to use the old ide ones.
all i can say is try to stay near the £800 mark please, the vaio is about £900 dont mind that but not more.

cheers
simmo

What PSU is in your son's machine? Is he already running a windows install, so he can make use of an upgrade copy of windows 7?

Assuming the PSU is up to scratch and you can use upgrade windows 7, how does this look?

i7 920 pre-overclocked to 4.0GHz, would cost something like this:

Phenom II X4 965BE (stock speed 3.40GHz) would cost something like this:

i5 750 (stock speed 2.66GHz), Crossfire capable would cost something like this:

i5 750 (stock speed 2.66GHz), no Crossfire support would cost something like this:

If he wants a system that will last ages and be easily upgradable then the best option is AMD atm.
Intel is and always have been flying through sockets at a ridiculous rate!

The X4 955BE overclocks to around the same level as the X4 965BE as they are both the same stepping and both have unlocked multipliers.
I know. I guess it would have to depend on if simmo.3 gonna be overclocking or not. Those are just for price referencing assuming he won't be overclocking...if he get a 955 instead of 965, can just simply subtract the price difference (£29) from the total of the 965 build.

Simmo how old is your son? If he's close to the age of college/uni then a laptop would be a good idea...

Gaming and laptop don't fix too well together, overheating issue making laptop not the most ideal computer for long hours of gaming. And as the sayings goes..."you'd have to spend around double the amount of money of a gaming desktop to get a gaming laptop of the equivalent performance".

thank you to all.
i am sorry, i forgot to say please dont spec AMD as i am a INTEL kind of guy.
some of you have added sata dvd drives? i have 2 ide ones, are they of no use? i dont need a monitor as i will keep the 22" one he has now.
the size of the HDrive is not important i only went for the black one coz of the cache, but i dont want to pay for ssd.
the old psu is the antec true blue 470 i think.
i do not O/C any more so it will all run at stock [will the retail cooler be ok]
no one has mentioned the vaio, is that coz this build will be stupidly faster?

i would like a gigabyte mb and ATI g/card but the rest is up to you lot.
i would like the best set up for a max of £900 at my door please.

thanks again guys...

ps. i say ATI coz i think you get more for your money?

I would get this build.

Change the motherboard to this one:

Since you are not overclocking I would not get the aftermarket cooler.

If you want a Crossfire capable motherboard I would look at the following one:

he is at college [still at home] at the moment with one more year to go, he cant make his mind up about uni, but buying a cheap laptop for course work is no prob, i only thought about a vaio coz its neater.

tank you

sounds like you want Marines i7 spec then.

you can keep your DVD drives, so saving fifteen pounds.

Check if you can get Windows cheaper since he is a student. If you are gaming the Core i5 750 build would be fine.

Here is a comparison of the Core i5 750 and Core i7 920:

The Core i5 750 has more aggressive Turbo Boost. If overclocked to the same speed the Core i7 920 would be ahead though.

change of plans guys.... can you fit it all in to this case.

Zalman Z7 Plus Midi Tower Case - Black

£42.99 inc VAT

thanks guys
