Just received a phonecall from what I beleive to be an Indian call-centre from a "Multinational Company" called "Online PC Help". I was told that all the computers in my area were effected by a problem and their team of Microsoft Certified Professionals wanted to help me resolve this.

It's obviously a Scam of some kind but I wandered if anyone has any more information on the company involved or what they are trying to acheive.

They knew my name, telephone number and that I had a computer, so they must have got the details from somewhere. They also called me about 6 months ago but I gave them less time then.

I humoured them by turning on my PC and they talked me through starting up eventviewer to 'prove' the computer had problems, the call was ended when they asked me to go into registry editor.

It wasn't NerdSupport but sounds like a similar scam.

I doubt theres that many households that dont have a PC and your personal data can be easily bought/data mined - not hard to put that together to find a way to sell you something...

ps3ud0

I'm pretty sure they get the info from the MS error reports & are then contacting people? Although I thought personal info isn't sent with them?

Haha i would like them to call me, i would inform them that i am a qualified ICT technican and would be aware if my computer had any problems, and then tell them i am reporting this to somebody to hopefully scare them a bit.

It's a scam, my mate at work had the same thing his mum was contacted whilst he wasn't there but didn't give any information over.

He then rang back and quized them, still not convinced.

He posted a post on the Microsoft support forums, and a nice Softey confirmed this is scam.

For goodness sake don't fall for it!!

It's a scam - if you let them go on enough they will eventually direct you to a website to make payment for a patch to resolve your "issues".

Your name and number has come from a database that they have bought. The fact thst you own a computer is purely by luck or knowledge from the db that they have bought. I am aware of several people who have followed this through and ended up paying for this.

I myself, at the start of the week, received a call like this and decided to hear what they would say. When they asked me to switch on the PC i said it was on and what to do next. I was told to go online and at this point I said but I only use my PC as a glorified word processor as it is very old and don't have the internet. At this point the caller hung up.

I've not had one :(.

Not sure what I'd do if I get one tbh... either point out that I'm using my Mac, or go to my PC and humour them just to see what it is they actually want!

I got a call of these people. They were so helpful and polite. It was deffinately worth giving a $5 charity donation through them after they fixed my pc down the phone line.
