Here's a pic of my desk:

As you can see there is not much space on my desk for my ps3, unless I stand it vertically.

Does this position seem like there's not enough air space and might overheat?
It is heating up a fair bit after a small gaming session... :o

Just wondering if this would be fine...

When playing the likes of god of war 3 my slim gets very hot to the touch.
Thats out in the open as well

I wouldnt be too comfortable leaving it there. You could try it out and if the fans crank up to full you know its not staying cool enough

I can't really determine the distance from the back in that photo but the only vent on the slim is at the back so if there is some space there I wouldn't worry about it too much.

There's only around 1-2 inches of space

If I do decide to move it, the only other place I can put it is vertically beside the xbox.

Ah well, see how it goes.

My slim is very very loud and gets fairly hot :( Even standing on its own with ton's of space behind it!

Mine is in a similar height compartment (much more space at the back though) and Ive never heard the fan come in

It's recommended to have 10cm of space all around the Playstation except obviously for the surface it's resting on. You're failing to meet this criteria because there's no space above the PS3 at all, and it doesn't seem like there's much space to the right of it either. In fact, the vents are on the right side of the slim if I recall correctly, and you are actually blocking it with your desk therefore the heat is trapped inside the console at worst, and inside the enclosed space at best. Neither situation is optimal or ideal in any way at all. It needs to be out in the open, not an enclosed space like that. I always shudder when I see people with TV stands and consoles in the enclosed spaces underneath it, like it's the norm to do.

I think there is something wrong with mine, seems to ramp up the fan after 30 mins when there is no need, so so loud!

The only vent is at the back, so all the hot air is being channeled there. If you have a decent amount of free space at the back then I can't see it being a major concern with that sort of space around the other sides.

Best way to test is too see if the fans speed up after playing some games.

Mine is now in the cupboard, can make all the noise it wants in there, I can't hear it! my xbox and sky hd box will be joining it tomorrow when i pick up a magic eye and a brushed faceplate.

Why have you left the stickers on your TV? God that drives me mad when people do that......

Anyway, on to the point of your PS3, it will be fine where it is, sure it's a little tight but there is some room for air to exhaust at the back.
